Maybe because the 6800 Ultra competes with the X800 XT? The Ultra Extreme and XT PE (direct competitors) are nonexistant or otherwise unatainable cards, so it's hardly a valid complaint anyway.

Actually, the MSRP of the ultra and the pe are identical, hence they compete against eachother, thats like saying the pro competes against the nu because they have the same pipes. You compare MSRP's

Only asking cause I dished out $220 on a 6800nu and unlocked everything and was expecting a lil more than this. =(

That is what i whant to know to you cant tell me that the 6600gt is just as good as the 6800nu no way

Well that definately shows a pretty decent performance advantage at the highest resolution. Does anyone actually play that high of a resolution?

I figured I would play at 1280x1024 and nothing higher than that. I'm not sure my monitor goes that high.

I play @2048x1536 whenever my rig and the game I'm playing can handle it. Unfortunately most reviewers stop at the middling 1600x1200 resolution leaving out the higher settings.

LOL. To each his own. I'd never call 1600x1200 middling myself. I don't even run my desktop that high, and I haven't ever run any games above 1024x768 myself.

Thats a buttload of pixels, dude. Most setups can't handle that at descent framerates (or at all).

Your post sums up the situation perfectly.
The x800xt is not available on ati site and is very very hard to find anywhere else. Just did a search on newegg, for any card with a x800xt chipset, nada nothing, every x800xt card sold out.
6800s in every form is plentiful and are actually starting to get dicsounted.

I have a 6800gt (ocd), but I like ati products, probly gonna have to get another ati card for use with my hdtv, but damn where can u get one. (Not egay)

Back to the benchies, seems like everyone has a problem.

Anand - using "special" pre release Nvidia drivers and no af
Hardocp - Using bfg overclocked nvidia cards
DH- Douche Hounds of ATI.. too many problems to list it seems.
Firingsquad - mixing beta cat drivers with release nvidia drivers.. and generally not a place i would consider the most reliable for benches of any kind.

Kind of a pickle for me, i need to run at 1200x1600 for the native res of my lcd. It ran fine last night, but I didnt hit any of the hardcore areas yet. I just hope it runs ok with everything maxed out when i get to those parts. Which, if u belive FS, i wont be able to on a 6800gt.

Hmmm where is the 6800 Ultra EE?

Guess they didn't want to test nvidias best....

Whats this talk of why they didn't test the P.E.? What about nvidias flagship?

The Ultra Extreme is NOT NV's flagship. Its not an official GPU from them. Its an overclocked Ultra, by 2 OEM's. The same as the BFG OC's are.

Take the heatsink off a UE, and its a Ultra. Says so right on it.

Actually this is accurate! Around here the x800 series was quite buyable up until just recently. Now there seem to be few left. Makes me wonder if there is some truth to the rumours of the x850 series being released soon. Or we can always hope that the r5xx series is coming sooner than expected.

Amazing. Everyone is actually "reaching" for things to disagree about. Was it not made clear enough for all of you? You cannot make a poor buying decision with recent cards for the game Half Life 2. All 6600GT and above owners are set for this engine. All X700pro and above owners are set for this engine.
And most importantly, none of these cards offer unplayable framerates at even the highest resolutions save for the 128MB cards using full AA/AF.

Who disagrees with this? And even better, why?

I hate to do it, but I agree with keys. Still the real question is will I enjoy the game on a 9700pro or do I have to upgrade before pci e is available and affordable on amd platforms. This decision to wait is killing me. 🙁

I believe its because everyone thought it was gonna be alot different. And now since its not they have to grasp at BS arguments about availability of cards and what is consider a flagship product.

I've been playing for an hour, at a very smooth framerate at the recommended settings (1024, medium, 16xAF). The 9700pro still lives!!!

That's great! ronnn, I think your gonna be ok with a 9700pro. That card still rocks.

I did a couple quick benchies using my 6800nu 128MB (unlocked) using the Anandtech supplied demo's at the same settings that they are using including my A64 3200+ @ 2.55ghz, 1GB PC3200 and 6800nu clocked to 420/910 16p/6vp. All done at max detail.

.................................................................Anandtech 6800nu....................My o/c'd 6800nu
at_canals_08 demo @ 1024x768 4xAA:...................77.6fps................................103.6fps
at_prison_05 demo @ 1024x768 4xAA:...................82.5fps................................119.3fps
at_coast_12 demo @ 1024x768 4xAA:....................87.8fps................................105.9fps

So quick moral to the story: Overclocking and extra pipes help...a lot.

For more flamebait. Hardocp just updated their conclusion.

"Update: We have gone back and updated our pages with a couple of graphs that show Maximum IQ settings in terms of AA and AF. Without a doubt the ATI Radeon X800XT-PE did by the far the best job at delivering a playable gaming experience. Of course it is up to the end user to determine if turning these options on give you any tangible gaming returns, but without a doubt if you want to run "ultra high quality settings," the ATI Radeon X800XT-PE gives a much better return than NVIDIA's solution."

Wow!!! That should be palunty to stroke some people's ego's.
And ATI's check probably didn't clear in time for their original conclusion. J/k.

Are you suggesting that hardware sites have advertisers and review accordingly? Or do some sites react to the critics and are willing to take a second look? All these reviews were done on short notice and seem quite sloppy.
