"My guess is that his exposure consists of accidental exposure to MTV/radio hip-pop."

Or the bumpin' bonehead fvcktards that pass through your neighborhood on their way to annoy the rest of the city. Does that count?

Well, might as well add something besides indifference to your rabid devotion. I hate rap because of the sheer lack of talent these "bands" have. Lets rip off samples from other songs and used recycled beats to put with our lack-luster rhyme scheme. Actually, I take that back. I hate rap because it just plain sounds bad.

You are an idiot... I was going to try and make a legitamite argument as to why you are an idiot but then I decided you are so closed minded and ignorant that you can't be helped.

An excellent point has been brought to my attention in this thread: a lot of people claim that rappers have a "lack-luster rhyme scheme", but when compared to rock(the genre of choice of the majority of rap haters), it is really on another level.

It's on another level all right:
  • Fluorocarbons and monoxide
    Push the water table lopside
Used to be free now it cost you a fee
Cause oil tankers spill they load as they roam cross the sea
Man, you gotta cook with it, bathe and clean with it (That's right)
When it's hot, summertime you fiend for it (Let em know)
You gotta put it in the iron you steamin with (That's right)
It's what they dress wounds and treat diseases with (Shout it out)...
Pretty much speaks for itself, so save your breath.

There are few and far between members that do like it. But we all hold true to it. Masta Ace is great.

Fo shizzle. I'm the idiot eh? Who is the one buying albums from no talent hacks like these? I see no reason to argue really. If you appreciate rap as an actual musical form, you are wrong. Just. Plain. Wrong.

You are wrong. Just. Plain. Wrong.

If you don't like it. Fine. Why can't you stay out of the threads associated with it then? It is called opinions and taste. Everyone doesn't have to have the same ones as you.

Yeah, and everyone doesn't need to express someone is an "idiot" when they express their opinion on something.

True, but if you would have avoided the thread like you should have (since you obviously do not like rap) then that comment would have never been made. No one forced you offer up your opinion.

But...forget it. I'm not going to argue with you over it.

the real reason you won't argue is because you have very little that you can actually say that would be true... you are just a closed minded ignorant atoter

It's not so much that I hate rap music (well, I do, but that's not my point)... it's more that I hate the "hip-hop attitude" ... I hate the attitude so much I refuse to even aknowledge their songs as music. I'm surprised they're praised as much as they are... especially with people like snoop who has promoted the use of illegal drugs for years and years.

BTW... what the hell is Eminem?

Do you listen and love growling death metal? How about John Tesh? No? You're ignorant and closed-minded. Oh yeah... idiot.

"For all your Rap Haters!" Beyond that point, its an open forum to say whatever I want within the bounds of the forum regulations. If the original post was a way to persuade me to "appreciate" rap more than the funk that builds up in your mouth when you sleep, it didn't work too well.

Oh yeah, someone up above me suggested "The Roots". So I went and found a few lyrics.

"Brainiac, Black's the mind, color funk, fuse the gut
I catch the what's when I kick it
Mysterious the maker of the raps crazy naps so I lacks
the cut, and got a fro but can't pick it
C-Not's my ni**a knows the news of the nappy cats
Crowns and kicks, and how it ease the mind
Yo freak freak ya don't ya don't stop
Cause The Roots got the body rock s**t
with the twist for your spine, bring it back, UHH!
Fat is my flow that's fluidic"

Wow, that so proved me wrong. 😀

mos def is all but done, Pharohe monche is not dropping enough material, Talib is slowly getting the recognition he deserves

This thread's the shizzlenizzle, yo.. Seriously, rap has promise as an art form, but in my opinion it's ruined by the gangsta bitches and ho's image perpetrated by the hip hop community. Last year I watched some MTV hip hop award show, and was treated to a ridiculous spectacle of image for the sake of image, taken to extremes.

Rap music in general, as far as I can tell, contains little subtlety or tact. Listen to classical music, or perhaps sub-divisions of "rock" like industrial music, and you find a wealth of story telling that takes several readings to understand the meaning, and then you don't quite get the full picture. It is introspective, many times built on tragedy. (w/ little to do with "bling bling") It comments on how fragile the framework of our society is, and emboldens the antihero with a rich and full character.

To further aggrieve these gentlemen, allow me to interpret the satirical song Big Man With a Gun. (Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral)
Like what it imitates, its lyrics are quite obscene and can be found here.

In general, it's from the first person perspective but egotistical to the point of megalomania, and is monotone, monosyllabic, homicidal, as well as treats women like property, not to mention worships chaos, violence death, and then comes to the realization its done for a higher calling.

Besides, it is now in it's rebellious stage. Give the young art time to mature into a group appreciative of The Art of Selling Out (tm), like early rock.

Why yes, Mr./Ms. Mod, I do realize there is a possibility of a flame war, but I have faith enough in humanity and AT readers that this topic shall not come to blows.😀 If you must punish, I beg for lenience.

Aside from the fact that that description fits a good number of hip-hop/rap songs, you can't say with certainty that just because you don't understand something intially, that makes it so much better than something else, or that another person listening to the same thing wouldn't pick up on it sooner. While I know that it's just foolish to try to convince someone who isn't a fan of rap to appreciate it, i don't think that the narrow-minded people who think or assume the whole genre is all 'bling-bling' is the right thing, either. Take your example of industrial music. I'm sure for every song that's such a profound narrative with deep meaning, there are a couple that are little more than just noise...the same as in almost all genres of music--it just so happens that something like industrial rock isn't nearly as popular, so it doesn't come under nearly as much scrutiny. I'll be the first person to agree, for people whose only exposure comes from MTV or something, it's understandable that their general impression would be something of that nature...but then, the same way a white person whose only exposure to minorities is the occasional passing by the projects/barrios would think that all of those people are poor or loud--until they meet people elsewhere that make them realize that "hey, everybody in this category isn't like what i thought."
There are songs even by people like Jay-Z that are fairly intricate narratives--for every song like 'Money Cash Hoes'--the type of song that he makes "to keep the cash registers ringing"--there's a 'Meet the Parents'

Also, a good deal of the flak that hip-hop gets is from it's quote-unquote 'negativity', which is basically a reflection of the tragedies and the environment
the person grew up in...and in fact, if i were narrow-minded as some of the other people around here, i could just as easily say that a genre like rock or metal is nothing but thrashing/devil worship/drugs/partying or that country is nothing more than drinking and driving a big truck--but i'm well aware that just because that's all i've been exposed to, there's more than what's on the surface.

Cliffsnotes: It's fine to dislike rap, I respect your opinion and all, but don't be a narrow-minded ass and assume that it's all 'bling-bling', or that it has no substance...because the same thing applies to any genre--some just aren't as popular right now.

I listen to disco, hip hop, alternative, indie rock, emo, IDM, punk, pop, country, folk, blue grass, jazz, heavy metal, nu-metal, soul, neo-soul, etc. etc. etc. and I've come to realize that there's no such thing as a bad GENRE.. Bad performers exist - of course.. I HATE every mainstream hip hop act- I can't listen to Puffy, 50 Cent, Nelly, or any of that watered down B.S. But to write off an entire genre is ignorant and and a sign of being totally uncultured.. Of course, ignorant and uncultured describes a large portion of Anandtech members and America as a whole...
