the "race card"

I have a friend that no matter what you say to him, or what you're talking about, he always brings his race into the issue. If you say that he is being stupid for something, he will say something like "oh, that's because I'm black right?" and it's like.. wtf man you did something stupid. :disgust: It annoys me that you have to be extra sensitive around him because you might say something that he could possibly conceive as being racist. I now avoid discussion with him of any issue that might bring race into play, and I pretty much stopped hanging out with him because I hate whenever the "race card" is used against me. If I'm in an argument with him, it's almost inevitable that it will come up. Do you have friends like this?

Nope, I wouldn't become friends with someone like that. I don't think race has anything to do with it -- he's just annoying.

Yep. Every time I have to fill out an EEO card before a potential employer even thinks about calling me in for an interview.

But seriously, I think he's just being a tool. I wouldnt bother hanging out with him if he always did that, unless he's just kidding of course... but even joking around all the time can get old.

People need something to blame their failures on in today's society.
The blame game is the biggest game in town right now.

Well the unfortunate part is that I don't have any black friends...the ones in high school were so damn stereotypical, even in a upper-middle class suburban environment like SE Michigan...so no, since most of my friends are asian, as am I...so that doesn't really work ;)

They don't seem to be for a state university near me. You fail to send back an EEO card and your resume will never make it to an interveiwers desk. You fill it and and you are a white male in a position already largely populated by white males (IT) and you'll be filled to the bottom.

Whenever I've applied for a job at that place, about a month after dropping my resume I've got an EEO card application sitting in my mail box. I've never filled one out and never got another call about the job. Same thing has happened for several of my friends. All of them white, and trying for IT positions.

Yeah, I had that tried on me in HS. I told him, "No, I said that you are an a$$hole. I didn't say all <insert race here> are."

He didn't appreciate it much.

Haha. Actually sometimes when an argument is getting a little out of hand one of my friends or I will say something like, "Oh you're just saying that because I'm back, aren't you?"

None of us are black. :D

He is like dead serious about it. One time he went off the deep end with it and made an effort (poor) to kick my ass. We were playing basketball and he was being annoying about something, and I told him to quit or I'd kick his ass. I was joking of course, but he apparently thought I wasn't and was all like "You think you're so big and strong because you're white.. blah blah blah.." and continued how I've oppressed him for so many years and blah blah blah and then he came after me. I was just like holy christ man.. I don't own any slaves, I don't want any slaves, get over it.

What a lightweight!

God this post reeks of flamebait.

Just start dropping the N bomb around him.

This post wasn't meant as flamebait. This is my first account on the forum, and while I registered yesterday and have a low post count, that shouldn't infer that I have ill intention with this post. The post was merely describing a situation that I've encountered, and was curious if anyone else has had anything similar happen to them.

Wow, some people on ATOT need to get a grip on themselves.
He's just stating something that is interesting about his "friend," and how he often uses his race as an excuse of some sort.

Sorry, but that made me laugh really hard.

It really sounds like your friend has some race issues. He probably just resents being black, since he doesn't exactly sound like the kind of person who truly subscribes to the black-man-being-kept-down-by-the-white-man-black-power! philosophy.

If it ever happens again, ask him two questions:

1) What is your definition of racism?
2) How does that definition apply to the situation at hand?

If he can't answer number 1 correctly, you win. If he can, more than likely he can't answer #2 correctly...you win.
