The quietest non SSD hard drive?

Hey

I am wondering what the most silent hard drive that one could buy right now is that isn't a solid state drive.(Solid state drives are way too expensive for me to consider right now)

Performance is only secondary. I don't care if it's 5400RPM. I just want the very quietest drive available.

i read in a review that the new RE2 1TB drives from WD are very well balanced and as such whipser silent.

Those come at a premium, if you want something cheaper the wd green ones are very quiet too.

Laptop drives (2.5") are generally much quieter than the 3.5" desktop ones. SATA drives even have all the same connectors so there's nothing to stop you using one. Performance isn't so great as most are 5400rpm.

You can fit them in your desktop case with a bracket of some kind, or without using some ingenuity.

laptop drives are expensive, slow, and small... you pay for them being small and they are quiet because they are slow.

It would be cheaper per GB to get a RE2 drive (maybe one smaller than 1TB) than a decent sized laptop drive.

And him ruling out SSD shows that money is an issue.

Consumer level WD Green WD10EADS are very quiet.

For "performance" OS drives, Samsung F1s are very quiet. They're noticeably quieter than WD Blacks.

Ask yourself how much "quietness" you need tho. Depending on your CPU fan, GPU fan, case fans, a "loud" drive may still be inaudible in your system.

WD Green would be my vote too.

You can also use a HD silencer like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817999003

That's what I have my WD 74Gb Raptor in b/c with out... it was loud as shit!

I'm actually about to get a SSD, then put my WD 640Gb Black in the HD Silencer and pull the 74Gb Raptor out of the system.

At that point my PC should be perfectly silent. SSD = silent.
640Gb (already quiet) in a HD silencer = super quiet
