I was happy to hear about the in game xmb thingy for ps3, until i realized you can't really do shit with it. I want to play a game and listen to my music (local on the ps3) and it says you can't. What the fuck is point of it then? (other than being able to msg friends without exiting, which should have been there on launch anyway)

Legally Sony can't do universal custom soundtrack support without paying MS for the patent. Plus, there are developers who don't even want to use the option because it interferes with their vision of their game (see PJE).

You have a computer, you have speakers/headphones attached to said computer, use it.

When I play console games, I like to get into the game and listen to the soundtrack. Gaming on PC is different. I listen to my own music and mute the PC game's soundtrack when I do PC gaming.

When i am playing a sports game, mini game (pixel junkies, lemmings, etc), or any game where sound isn't required I want my music. I cannot understand why it takes sony 1345 revisions to their god damned software to get even moderate usability.

They need to stop marketing it as a "home media" device, because it does such a shitty job at everything OS related.

Edit- Yes i have a computer and a cell phone, that doesn't mean i should have to use both of them to have half decent console. God damn sony.

it take sony a while because well they are not a software company. While people have this hate for microsoft and windows. Its just easier for them to "see" the problems and do something about it.

honestly I think they just added ingame xmb as its 1 less bullet point the 360 has against them.

Then just fucking copy MS. You don't have to reinvent the damn wheel just so you can say "we're different". Use MS's ideas and maybe a dash of logic and then the OS just might be half usable

No more ps3 for me tonight, too angry :) :|

My own primary complaint is that you don't get the in-game XMB for PS1/PS2 games. I've got hardware BC, so it's not like the PS3 is doing much more than some upscaling! They didn't even add the clock, IIRC - WTF?

I personally don't care as much about movies having the in-game XMB, although I could see how it might be annoying for some people not to have it.

You can't just copy other companies like that. Like I said up above, MS has patents out on some of these features that fanboys are whining about.

Anyway, Sony believes in their OS (been around since the PSX and the XMB is making its way into ALL Sony devices), and many people prefer it to the dashboard. It's hardly half-usable.

i agree the in-game XMB is very underwhelming. 1/2 of the stuff i try to access in-game will tell me "you must quit the game to use this feature" when I click on it.

it also sucks cause hot shots golf already had it's own in-game XMB where you could only access your friend list, while in a lobby. and i think because of that, the "in-game XMB" feature does not work at all in that game. it is like because they hardcoded it the specific way when developing the game, the improvement from the FW update won't work with the game.

I very much like the XMB as a unifying GUI across Sony's devices - it's what's convinced me to go with a Sony AVR when I finally pick one up. But it's pretty awful from a design standpoint - tons of wasted space, and you really have to know where you're going to adjust certain settings, much more so than the Wii or 360 dashboards.

That isn't a complaint against the PS3 per se - I have an A3000-series Sony SXRD set, and some reviewers felt that the XMB was a step back from the previous GUIs. As I said before, I disagree, but the XMB isn't universally beloved.

How can there be a patent for using your media player to play media?

I could swear there's prior works for that.

That doesn't look the same to me as simply streaming audio from a generic playlist while playing any game.

I'm not saying make a direct copy of MS, but at least you some god damned common sense when designing things.

Copying movies over to the ps3? Logically, it should copy them over exactly as they were on the computer. Sony thinks that dumping 300+ video files into one folder makes sense.

Little things like that make me hate the PS3. Its so close to actually being a capable media player, but they just use some backwards ass logic in designing the os

Yeah, I don't see anything like that in there. That patent covers replacing the video game music with user-defined music, but I don't think it covers playing music on top of a video game (and whatever sounds it is generating).
