I hope the GOP has the intelligence and courage to tell social conservatives to sit down and shut up. Who are the social conservatives going to flock to? If they want to have any chance at having any say in national politics, their only option is the GOP.

I respect someone sticking to their principles, but that virtue is almost never compatible with being in public office, especially at the national level.

Meh, where are those voters going to go? To the Democratic Party?

This is a non-story, *but* involves a hot-button progressive cause, so yay! it's news!

"Puppeteer"? You wish.

I know, but does the GOP leadership know that?

The puppeteer is the social conservatives, the puppet is the GOP.

So... are you against citizens having a say in how elected officials vote? Or are you only against citizens who you disagree with having a say in how elected officials vote?

The gop should take a stand against these idiots. These social Conservatives aren't Conservatives at all and give normal Conservatives a bad name. The gop should ignore them, Are they going to go to the democrats?

Neither. I'm hoping the GOP recognizes social conservatives for what they are: a minority that has cost and will continue to cost them elections.

Why does the gop keep pandering to these nutjobs? Do they not realize these social "Conservatives" alienate so many potential voters who wont vote for the gop.

These guys are a minority and should be treated like little children. They aren't serious when they are threatening to leave the gop. There is no way they would go to the democrats.

The real problem in this situation is we have this stupid two-party system where everyone must be lumped into one of two categories.

It shouldn't be that social conservatives should be silenced, it should be that the two-party system be demolished.

But, the system probably will never change...

The reason that system is in place has to do with the way that votes are tallied.

Long story short, any and all third parties over time will merge themselves with one of the major parties in order to stand a chance. If we didn't have the electoral college system, this wouldn't be the case.

Silenced? No. But they shouldn't have as much or more political power than the majority, either... which is what they wield in the GOP.

They do not have as much or more power than the majority. Their viewpoints are supported by the majority of their party. Same with the democrats and why marriage has already begun to be redefined in the dictionaries. The majority has realized they were bigots to have tried to prevent people who love each other from marrying just because they are of the same sex, but in the case of this majority, they win elections and the conservatives can't. Unfortunately, the Neanderthal of the American population, the ignorant and socially backward, particularly in the Bible Belt South, by the choices they make in local districts, have kept that Neanderthal culture alive, and like the original that could not keep up with Homo sapiens, is going extinct and taking it's backward party with them.

You are a very vocal supporter of gay marriage. You cannot create a thread saying that the people who oppose gay marriage should "sit down and shut up" while claiming it's for any other reason than your personal beliefs.

There was a time when gay marriage support was the minority. I guarantee you would never have told those people who then were in the minority to "sit down and shut up".

All I'm really saying is be honest.

What is it you want government to do? Do you support the liberals on social issues and the conservatives on fiscal issues? Do you wish there was a party that better represented you? What is it?

You're not the arbiter of the threads I can and cannot create, nor are you an authority on what I believe. When support for gay marriage was a minority view, the Democratic party paid for it by losing elections... and I was always pragmatic about the issue, and never demanded that the Democratic party push for same-sex marriage. Even back then I realized that same-sex marriage was something that, generationally, would come to be.

All I'm really saying is be honest.

You're wrong to think I am not being honest.

What is it you want government to do? Do you support the liberals on social issues and the conservatives on fiscal issues? Do you wish there was a party that better represented you? What is it?

That is generally true.
