the PSN vs. Xbox live

whats the difference? the only difference i see with xbox live is that this service has more games and you have to pay a monthly fees for this, and on top of this fee you have to pay for the downloadable games.

I have a PS3 and I use the PSN. This service is free and it does pretty much what the xbox live does.

so... why is xbox live charging a fee?

I don't have my Jasper 360 yet (mainly since I have 15+ unplayed PC,PS3,PS2 games) but as I understand it the 360 has better: chat support, friends / groups support, blocking of people you don't want to play with. Plus it has more than 2x the active players in the US.

> and on top of this fee you have to pay for the downloadable games
Huh? you mean the xbox equivalent of PixelJunk Monsters and such that Sony makes you pay for too? XBLA games are completely separate from playing things like Call of Duty online. You pay for downloaded games on both platforms.

The $3 a month (with 13-month cards) is for online play / matchmaking not an equivalent to GameTap.

so... why is xbox live charging a fee?
Because they can get away with it. The year head start let them set the price without any competing consoles to make MS look bad, and xbox owners wanting to play against players around the country have no easy alternative.

I thought the PS3 chat/friend/support/blocking is pretty good, don't see why we need to pay a fee for that. Oh, and let me bring up another point. Sony's PS3 support is excellent, i called them twice during the winterbreak when most companies are closed for the holiday season I still got helpful technical support from them, and this is without even have to wait on the phone.

what i was trying to say is that when you pay a fee on xbl, you should get some free games with the subscription... but nope. so in this aspect, its exactly like the PSN but just with a fee.

My eyes have been opened! What the hell am I doing paying for this crap??
Thanks, this revalation is going to sway a lot of people.

Yea, I was talking with a 360 owner, and he was convinced that xbox live was better than PSN, but I couldn't get him to tell me one thing that was actually better about it.

Well, here's one thing that's better: try talking to a buddy who's not playing the same game as you. Sounds simple, but it's handy, and PSN doesn't do it.

XBL feels like a more complete service. To me, I don't really care about the monthly fee as long as it just works. I don't have a PS3 or PSP so can't comment on long-term use, just from what I've experienced from short term bursts. Something about it just feels more complete, but I've been a subscriber since early 2003, so maybe I'm a little biased.

i just picked up cod4 for the ps3, whilst my xbox is being repaired, and i have to say it was total lag fest. everyone but the host was on 2 yellow bars

also i can download a 1gb demo off live in a few minutes, on the psn at least half an hour

id pay for a better service if it rival live

It damn well better be; you have to pay for it.

I remember Diablo on Battle.net which was free and it worked fine. Same with Myth:TFL and Soulblighter on Bungie.net. Both those services were excellent and free and I even LIKED the community. For me to decide that a game service was worth paying for, it would have to surpass either of those by a great margin. I'm just opposed to the idea of paying a monthly bill just for the privilege of playing a video game. The entire concept of it is something I just may never get over. XBL just isn't for me, and neither are any of the other pay-to-play online games.

CS:S is still free to play too. What does XBL do that's worth 3 bucks?

Cell phone? Aim? ICQ? I'm not paying extra to talk to some asshole whos not even playing the game I'm playing.

You feel way too strongly about this.

It's always about perceived value when it comes to these things. Some people think WoW is worth paying $15/mo for. If what you have works for you, great. Myself, I like the robustness of XBL. Being in a game and being able to be invited to a different one. Having one username/gamertag for everything. Being able to open a chat session with someone who isn't playing the same game and not having to use the computer or minutes on my phone.

As I said, if PSN works great for you, then good. Keep using it. I don't see the need to go running around thinking people who pay for things that are similar are naive/stupid.

You want to be on a cellphone, aim, or icq while playing on your console? You sir have just lost ground for your beloved PSN.

Exactly. The people you're talking to are _your friends_. The irony is, talking to random assholes you just happen to be playing with, the PS3 handles just fine. 😉

Look, I think the PS3 has plenty of strong points, but PSN just isn't as good as Live. I own both consoles, I should know.

I don't min paying cuz I can afford it. I understand some wouldn't want to pay but I think XBL is great.

Go try to play SF2HDR online on 360 and then try on PS3 and ell that is one reason. That may be the developers fault but whatever....it is what it is.

Walmart online had 13 month xbl cards for 29.99 yesterday. I grabbed 2. So yeah 29.99 for 13 months is more that zero but you get what you pay for. I like xbl much better than psn..so much that I think it is worth paying for it.

Obviously others will have different opinions and that is ok. lol Bye 2u troll thread.

The difference was so much more pronounced before PSN implemented the in-game XMB. Xbox Live is still better, but not by as much as it used to be.

That said, anyone who thinks PSN will be free forever is fooling themselves.

Better connections, better network speed, 8-player party system, one username that is standard and required in ALL 360 games, integrated console/online experience where you are recognized as one username/persona, a headset is standard with 2 of the 3 console SKU's, integrated matchmaking with every game, cross-game invites, ease of using text/voice messaging to communicate with anybody on your friends list at any time no matter what you're doing, the upcoming Primetime looks very promising, blah blah blah.

The PS3 online system hasn't shown me, personally, to be anywhere near the quality of Live. Until it does so, I'll gladly pay Microsoft $40 a year. With the exception of their problems around this time last year, their service is rock solid.

EXACTLY! I can't stand the PSN. You know what they say, you get what you pay for.

When I see a friend online, I just open up a chat channel ANYWHERE and start talking to him (XBox Live). With the PSN, if I'm on the XMB and my friend is in the middle of a game, oooooo, I can send him a text message. I have a mic, I don't want to text! Oh, you want to switch games? Sorry, have to disconnect, and then reconnect when the game starts. WTF?

Secondly, WTH is up with the download speed on the PSN. Slow as shit.

Now if you don't have any friends, and don't mind slow downloads, the PSN should be fine for you. But the ONLY reason you think you are getting a "great deal" with your free PSN, is because you haven't played on XBox Live. XBox Live is how it SHOULD be done and what Sony strives for on their PSN.

BTW, I have a 360 and PS3 and definitely prefer XBox Live. I actually have two XBox Live accounts.

More good points.

You know, I think this is the main reason some people don't see the point in paying for Live. I'm convinced that those who say PSN is just as good as Live do not have any friends they game with. Over half of the main advantages of Live involve user/user interaction.

You had to call tech support? I've never had to call Xbox tech support. Maybe that's the difference.

Maybe the problem is you think your friends are assholes. If I had as few friends as you, I probably wouldn't pay for a friend-oriented service either.

PSN has lots of hackers
people use mouses on the Playstation which ruins the "fairness" of FPSes
I like the consistency of xbox-live more
