The PS3 is a helluva media device

Received a 250gb PS3 (slim form factor) as a Christmas gift and hooked everything up last night. I'm fairly surprised at how competent it is as a media playback device. Running PS3 Media Server plus Playon gave me access to MKV playback (with surround sound, something my xbox couldn't do), plus Hulu, Bluray, and Netflix playback. I still prefer my WD Live for media playback, but the PS3 does surprisingly well. MKV playback seems oddly clearer on my ps3, which shouldn't be the case since transoding is involved.

Given its $299 base price, the PS3 is a heck of a bargain all things considered.

I love it. Sucks that you cant play music unless you back out of the video tab.

Mine is broken. All I did was update to 2.70. And play MGS4 between semesters. I want my money back!

welcome to 2006, he hehe.

Love my PS3!

Funny thing is that I owned a 40gb PS3 for years before ebaying it, mostly because there were too many compromises/workarounds. Now with native Netflix and PS3 Media Server (plus the less chubby exterior), I'm quite pleased with the platform.

Modern Warfare 2 is in the mail as well, so maybe it'll make a gamer out of me!

Win7 + UPnP + DivX splitter = playback w/ no transcoding

Is there a tutorial on how to set it up? I'm using ps3 media center and by far the best thing but it still needs to transcode so fast forwarding or rewinding can be a pain.

Based on what I'm reading, the ps3 doesn't currently support MKV so, even if it's using WIN7s built in media sharing capabilities, it's still transcoding. Divx + Windows 7 is pretty nice for Xbox 360 media center integration, but I'm not really sure it has a benefit on the PS3 (over PS3 Media Server).

I :heart; my PS3's blu-ray playback and DVD upscaling, but Netflix streaming (with the free software disc) is so convenient it's winning me over.

Get a program called mkv2vob. It will take your mkv and put it into a mpg container that the ps3 can recognize. If you don't have to encode subtitles, the whole process is very quick. I dump the finished files into a folder that I have shared with tversity. Streams beautifully over the network, and since there's no transcoding while streaming, you can ff/rew with no problems.

I need something like this. I had to go ghetto and burn the latest episode of Top Gear to a DVD to watch on my TV.

ugh

Along similar lines to how great the PS3 is, I was recently reading an article in The Economist about how the US Air Force is purchasing 2,200 of them to build a supercomputer.

Well the issue is that the PS3 doesn't run DivX 7(yet), if/when that is updated it will be completely seamless. The best thing you can do now is MKV2VOB. MKV is just the container for the media streams which the PS3 doesn't understand. There is no loss of quality and it goes pretty quickly IME(e8400 @ 3.6ghz).
