I really should.

I use FreeBSd for a firewall but I gues sthat doesn't count as a layer 5+ firewall. I will be setting up Astaro or at least Clark connect soon;(

Need to decide on antivir...or ponnying up $$ that I don't have for kapersky....

I guess I could use norton;)

I don't. I also have something on this box that wants to connect to random IP's over netbios. A year or so ago, I tried to track it down using half a dozen spyware programs and literally half a dozen different antivirus packages, and all of them turned up nothing So I just make sure not to enable netbios on this PC.

nope. And I don't have stability or performance issues from it either. I'm behind a router with a hardware firewall...should be all I need.

lol...

::edit::

anyway, this is what I use:

Windows XP Pro SP2 (with enhanced security features enabled)

Defender Pro 2005
Defender Pro Antispam
Defender Pro Firewall

Adaware SE
Microsoft Antispyware Beta

From experience, my system is extremely stable. What one program fails to track, the other ones will pick up without hesitation. That is, as far as software goes.

I really haven't needed an antivirus program up to this point, but with the kaspersky deal in the hot deals forum I decided to shell out the $25 bucks for Kaspersky.

I have an Astaro box screening traffic for the baddies (this thing is bada$$, thanks for the initial tip Goosemaster!) and I run as a Limited User. Too lazy to register NOD32 and the trial expired two weeks ago. :p

Every three or so months I'll download AEG and do a scan. Then I uninstall and eventually repeat the process. I don't download much, use a restricted account, and don't go to any shady websites anyways.

I have McAfee 8.0 Corporate installed, but the active scan is disabled because of the crazy amount of CPU time it takes. It still does a weekly scan.

Astaro is the sh!t:D

I wuv it. Too bad the machine it will run on will be a PII. Astaro is pretty heavy stuff and needs a abeefy machine because of all the processes it runs (kapersky antivirus, spam filtering etc)

It's more of a why not kind of thing. doesn't really eat up that much RAM, just safer to have it running in the background, especially when it's free

I dunno about others, but I'm a bit OCD and if I see too many icons in the right-hand corner then I get annoyed. A speaker and an ATi logo is all I need.

Not totally secure but it does a lot. The whole Power user thing pisses me off. Appearantly they fixed the program permission problems in Vista.
