As far as corruption goes, why shouldn't the elite be corrupt? If our position is that those we elect are the smartest and best educated, obviously they are better than the rest of us and therefore deserve first run at the trough come feeding time. They know best how to divide up the wealth, right?

I much prefer honest and principled over smart and well educated. Trouble is that can be hard to determine.
