The Pretty Dots Are BACK!!!!

Grrrrr..... OK - like I explained before, randomly spaced one pixel colored dots show up on my screen in place of where open windows used to be. For example, my screen is clear of pretty little dots until I open up "My Computer." Then, when I close "My Computer", there are lots of little colored pixels where the open window used to be (not anywhere else). I'm not sure what's causing this as I haven't changed anything recently. I took out my DVD decoder card before and that seemed to solve the problem. However, the DVD decoder is still gone and they're back. GRRRRRRR I'm not OCed with anything at all, so that's not the problem. All drivers/etc are up to date. Any help you guys could offer would be more than appreciated. Thanks in advance...

EDIT: They come up with every window - not just that one. They don't seem to be very picky... They also never came up before I was taking advantage of both processors (dual Athlon MP 1600+) with the CLI client. Could it be heat related? Also, right clicking and then clicking on "Refresh" clears them up until the next window is closed.
 
Two possibilities I can think of. Both involve your video card.

1) It's possible that your video drivers have somehow been corrupted, or are being interfered with by some other software. Try booting in some sort of safe mode, just to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, I'd suggest removing and reinstalling your video drivers.

2) You're not overclocked, but it may still be a heat related issue. Open up the box, and check to see that the video card's fan (if present) is working. If there is no fan on your card, check that the heatsink is secured. If there's no heatsink, for God's sake put one on! 😉

Your pretty little dots are commonly refered to as "artifacts". This is usually linked to overclocked video cores or memory, but too much heat will cause the same problems. Perhaps the air in your case is just getting a little hot? Pop the top on your case, reboot the system after a few minutes and see if the problem remains.

I've seen something similar to that happen on a couple of computers with video cards that were trying to die.

I second Dave's suggestion to try a different video card and see what happens.
 
I think I have an ATI card lying around here somewhere. Maybe I'll give that a try if I can't fix it before that.

EDIT: Yep! It's an ATI Radeon LE (32MB version) - I'll give that a whirl later on...

Well, while everybody else is concentrating on the video card as the source of the problems, I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that it's actually related to a little-known problem in the floppy drive. :Q

Seriously, one other idea though would be to go to the video Properties, probably in Advanced/Performance, and try backing down the Acceleration function of the video card one notch and see if that resolves the problem; being a software solution, this might be something to try before swapping out hardware. 😉

Voodoo3 3000 Rules! 😀 I had one... Then I gave it to my bro, and upgraded to a ATI RADEON 64MB DDR VIVO 😀😀.
 
I have a voodoo 5 laying around. I buy every oe that I can when I see them online ( for cheap 🙂 )I am an avid 3DFX man. Don't shoot me 🙂
 
We have the same problem on some computers at work.
We believe its the ATI graphic card, but only the ones from malaysa ( I think).

Its mostly under Win2K, and only with some drivers, so try a drivers change. 😛
