Great movie... Up till this point.

Are you kidding me? It's the ending that makes this movie as good as it is.

No... It's the ending that makes this movie a 3/5 instead of a 5/5.

I disagree.. I know the ending was a bit out there but they sold it by having it set in that time period, and by emphasizing how little was known about electricity and its possibilities. So you have to put yourself in that Tesla mindset, that anything is possible, and in this film's different take on history, creating a clone was possible.

Exactly, I thought that the ending was consistent with the world they created and a pretty big, and twisted, twist. In the end The Prestige was one of the best movies I've seen.

+1
I thoroughly enjoyed the science fiction element that was added to the twist. Also Michael Caine's explanation of the "The Prestige" really set the tone of what the movie was about. The delivery and execution were just spectacular. One of my favorite movies in recent memory.

So he will essentially never ever ever experience dying in this manner then, right? He would be 1 person falling, and at the split both people are the same, but for the one who drowns, it's over. But because he is the same in both conditions, he will live on forever in life, not having a chance, logically, of dying.

Better to describe the new Jackman as a duplicate instead of clone.

To all who hated the ending, did you get tricked by the pledge and the turn, but miss the prestige? Magic is lame when you are shown how they did it.

No, it can end when the original and duplicates are all dead.

I can't believe people like the ending. It was a total deux ex element that had no relevance to the rest of the story. The movie would have been fine without the weird sci-fi cloning element and simply focused on jackman's obsession with bale's character and the final revelation of bale's secret.

yeah you got it. Jackman died every time he did his stunt and a new clone took over.

I thought it was the other way around... Jackman's clone died everytime.

I thought this too. 🙁

How could you think that? The trapdoor below the stage was there solely to dispose of the guy who entered the machine, and to make it seem as though he disappeared when he had actually been replicated. The new him carried on the show while the old him was disposed of.

The dead clones are shown at the end. I forget the exact confrontation, but it involved Caine, Jackman, and possibly Bale at the end of the film. They are in some building and there are two rows of dead clones in tanks on either side of them, shocking Caine and/or Bale.

I forgot about that.. That is creepy...

Bale's character used Tesla's machine to make a clone of himself. Bale is the one that went to Tesla asking him for a teleportation machine and one of the side effects is cloning. It's not a twin brother. Then the other dude's character goes to Tesla wanting him to build another one.

The movie very clearly explains everything nice and slowly. I don't understand why people ask questions about this movie.

i thought in the end, when he was talking to michael caines character, caine said he wasnt brave, and jackman said he *was* brave, because he never knew if he would be the one transported, or the one falling into the box of water.

did i hear that wrong? its been a while since ive seen it.

Pretty much every time he did that 'trick', he'd get cloned and die. The original clone would die and the new one would live. Essentially each time he performed, he knew it meant his death and replacement by the new clone.

Makes you wonder how they managed to hide/dump the all dead clones... 😕

Bale snuck backstage and found the dead clones in the tanks of water. He was trying to break hugh's character out when someone saw him, someone who didn't know about the clones. That person called the authorities and Bale's character was arrested for murder because they thought Bale's character locked the tank.

Bale went to prison leaving his clone to take care of his daughter.

Really. Do you guys actually watch movies or do you put in the DVD and stare at the screen drooling?

Can someone explain to me what all happened in this movie? So Bale's character had a doube the whole time, right? Tesla's machine "cloned" and transported Jackman's character?

How did you not understand it?

there's just so much going on, so much behind the scenes stuff, etc. it just got confusing trying to follow everything.

It wasn't that complicated ... I figured out everything except that Bales character was also his brother/security flunky-guy well before the end.

Uh, Bale never went to Tesla to get a clone. He already had a twin/double(who acted like him), when Michael Cain's character was explaining Bale's trick he guessed that there was a double or look-a-like. But Jackman didn't think it was that simple. Bale's trick was his dedication to the act, he had to sacrifice alot for the trick (his double/his life/his wife) in order to make it work just like in the beginning he was able to see through the trick of the chinaman by saying it was all an act.

Yeah, the movie explained everything clearly to everyone except you  Bale never used the tesla, dummy.

I thought it was a great movie. But i also assumed the clone was the one dying and Jackman was the one getting teleported.

The old clone dies because he's the one who was on stage and falls through the trapdoor into the water. The new clone appears behind the audience. Additional evidence: When Tesla tried the experiment, nothing seemed to happen to the hat or animal, but they eventually found all the clones behind Tesla's building.

Jackman's character is "brave" because he knows he will have to suffer the agony of dying when he does the next show. Good movie--I especially love the magician's assistant 😉

No man, Jackman was dying every time he cloned himself - that's what made the movie so fucked up.

Think about it, when he uses the cloning machine the first time, we see a clone of him appear fifteen feet away. If the Jackman who appeared was the original one, the director would have tried to show that by switching the camera angle. Instead, the Jackman standing in the cloning device is still the "primary" character.

Then why did Jackman's character go to Tesla asking Tesla to make him the same machine that Tesla made for Bale's character?

I don't think it really matters whether it was the original that falls into the box, or the new clone. He knew he was killing someone each time, but it's the sacrifice he had to make for the trick. It's a sharp contrast to how he is in the beginning of the movie, when he doesn't want to "get his hands dirty" by killing a bird in his show.

The machine Tesla made for Bale was purely for show, it didn't actually do anything. Bale's character just tricked him into wasting his time going after something that never even existed.

Then why did Jackman's character go to Tesla asking Tesla to make him the same machine that Tesla made for Bale's character?

Bale told Jackman that Tesla was the key, and gave him a fake journal that he had to decipher, intending to send him on a sort of wild goose chase. That's what I recall interpreting of it. Bale did not know about the machine, as he and his double had no idea how Jackman's new trick worked, one of them was so obsessed with how it worked that he snuck backstage at one of the shows to see what was going on and sees one of the Jackmans in the water. So I don't think Bale used the machine.

Also, Jackman was asking Tesla for a teleportation machine, not a cloning machine. I take it that Tesla had never made such a machine before which was why he had difficulty with it, and ended up making a cloning machine by accident.
