Can someone explain to me what all happened in this movie? So Bale's character had a doube the whole time, right? Tesla's machine "cloned" and transported Jackman's character?

yeah you got it. Jackman died every time he did his stunt and a new clone took over.

The person alive--the one who is talking--IS a clone.

The person surviving and the person dying are 100% identical, down to the last atom. So he is both people at once.

This isn't cloning like what you see in modern day science - making a new entity with the same DNA as the original. The original person is split in two, both of which are the exact same as the original in every way.

The "clone" IS him, he IS the "clone". After the machine did it's thing, there are two of him, both of which are exactly the same. The clone's consciousness is in effect no different from the original.

Imagine it. You are in a room with you. One of you has to die because there can only be one you. It doesn't matter which one dies right? Either way you live on... or do you?

Yes, it was a very good movie up until they threw in the cloning bit. It's like they almost completed the script and suddenly were afflicted with writer's block, and this was the best they could come up with to finish off the movie.

Are you kidding me? It's the ending that makes this movie as good as it is.

No... It's the ending that makes this movie a 3/5 instead of a 5/5.

yes, now that I think about it I'm not sure why he would say that.

I wasn't thrilled over this movie. I thought it was decent but I wouldn't watch it again. I preferred "the illusionist".

Great movie. Really makes you think. But then again I'm one of those hopeless flukes of evolution that actually enjoys literary analysis, so... :p

I disagree.. I know the ending was a bit out there but they sold it by having it set in that time period, and by emphasizing how little was known about electricity and its possibilities. So you have to put yourself in that Tesla mindset, that anything is possible, and in this film's different take on history, creating a clone was possible.

Exactly, I thought that the ending was consistent with the world they created and a pretty big, and twisted, twist. In the end The Prestige was one of the best movies I've seen.

Pretty much every time he did that 'trick', he'd get cloned and die. The original clone would die and the new one would live. Essentially each time he performed, he knew it meant his death and replacement by the new clone.

Makes you wonder how they managed to hide/dump the all dead clones...

The dead clones are shown at the end. I forget the exact confrontation, but it involved Caine, Jackman, and possibly Bale at the end of the film. They are in some building and there are two rows of dead clones in tanks on either side of them, shocking Caine and/or Bale.

It still remains that if he did the trick again HE would definitely be the one to drop into the water. The moment a clone is created they begin to diverge in experience and having no connection after the initial split they can definitely be said to become two distinct individuals.

The new clone will have an unbroken memory of his life up to the point that he does the trick again, at which point his experiences diverge from the one who appears some distance away. The living clone will never know what it is like to die in the final portion of the act because it isn't him that dies, its the previous copy.
