Good:
Cheap, tastes amazing fried, taste amazing mashed, tastes excellent in most other appliactions.

Bad:
Not much except that there was something about it producing carcinogenic substances when being cooked at high temperatures for long periods of time. Oh well, rather die than not be able to eat the potatio.

You should try Yukon Gold potatoes - they are amazing. All I do is cook them in the microwave and they are delicious without adding anything to them. I can only find them at Whole Foods or Central Market, but you should definitely give them a try...much better than regular Russet Potatoes.

2nded

I get baby ones too... cut in half, cover in a little olive oil and rosemary, salt, pepper. Toss in oven at 450, come back in 30 min and have a delicious and healthy snack/side dish.

I can't think of anything bad about them.

They are cheap, have vitamin C and give you a decent load of energy in carbs.

I usually just bake one or two Russet potatoes and sprinkle a pinch of salt on them and that's it. Mmmmmm.... so good. Cheap, nutricious and yummy.

They most certainly do. They easily trump their more uniform cousins in both taste and nutrition.

That being said...they aren't a replacement for a big ass baker smoothered in melted cheese, bacon, and chives.

I looove real butter, and use it. I love salt. I never thought I would like a potato as much without either, perhaps TOPPED by sour cream.

I was mistaken.

This is true. I feel the same way about Red Bliss potatoes. I'm sure there are other varieties as well, and around here, we have Yukon Gold and Red Bliss at regular supermarkets and produce places.

Honestly, just try, no matter how you feel about buttter, salt, and/or sour cream being the key, try a good one without them, and you shall see!

Damn, I miss potatoes. Good stuff. I like the little red guys especially, but boiled FTW, either with some gravy or just butter + sour cream. Baked FTW. Twice baked FTW. Mashed FTW. Top my shits with tons of real butter, sour cream (none of that light crap), salt... basically covered with win.

QFT. Sweet potatoes are the bomb diggity.

I also like red potatoes. yummy!

One of my favorite ways to fix potatoes is to cut them up into small squares and sprinkle garlic and herb seasoning over them. Some people also use cheddar, but since I'm lactose intolerant I don't do that.

Another favorite is to sprinkle a seasoning over the potatoes that roughly contains paprika, red pepper, salt, powdered mustard seed, and a little sugar.

Before I found out I was lactose intolerant, I loved mashed potatoes with heavy cream added.

edit:

Good: high in fiber and vitamins/minerals if you leave the skin on
low in fat
cheap
easy to cook

Bad: as others have said, almost 100% carbs.
some people have reactions that cause their joints to ache when they eat nightshade vegetables. Potatoes are a nightshade vegetable.

A good alternative to potatoes is beans.

i have never heard anyone say that in RL until now.

I've always liked 'em. I think I read that they're one of the vegetables where it pays to buy them organic, so I usually do. I used to buy the brown baking kind but have been getting the smaller white ones lately because they are way easier to clean and seem to keep a lot better. I always keep them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator, which experience has shown me keeps them from going bad nearly as fast. I used to cook them in the microwave (turning a few times), but lately I usually cut them in big pieces and steam them ~12 minutes. I do not peel them.

I don't use that stuff. :|

Mostly lately I add cooked potato pieces to a mix of veges I put in burritos. They definitely add something I'd miss if I didn't include them. I also like homefries - sliced potatoes and onions fried in some oil, with some seasoning. I usually cook the spuds first. I only do that occasionally, though.

My market has them, they have everything. I believe they are like smallish white potatoes only somewhat golden.

The secret of making hashbrown potatoes is to cook them first, preferably baked. Shred the cooled (or refrigerated) cooked potato onto a hot oiled skillet, etc. It took me years to figure this out (pre-internet).

Damn I love potatoes. Hashbrowns, fries, baked potatoes and just about everything else. It's all delicious.

The wife makes some fries potato curry sometime that's insane. It's basically like a spiced fry.

We also eat other potato'esque foods like the tara root. It has a natural sweetness to it that's delicious, but the texture of potato. It's not as sweet as the sweet potato.

No. It stems from an annoyance I have with my fiance. Every single time the word potato is mentioned, she goes on a rampage about how horrible they are for your health. Yet, she never can come up with any reasons as to why they are bad. In fact, she just doesn't like the taste. It is one of her odd quirks. So I was just curious if anyone can come up with unhealthy parts of a potato.

I did learn about Solanine and resistant starches from this thread. It is nice to learn new things.
