No, it means his client base is so spread and diverse that you're not going to able to poach one or two large account and score with that. Starting your own business and running is hard. If it was easy everyone would be doing it.

There are two types of people, the one who takes risk and one who doesn't. Not everyone is cut out to have their own business. You can dream all you want about having a business but that's all it will ever be. People like Fuzzy takes risk and do it. He lives his dream and turns into reality.
 
I drove from Rio to Ushuaia. Most of the way the roads are fine, but south of Bueno Ares most of the 'highways' were gravel. Reasonably well graded, but you're in the middle of nowhere and you could drive all day and see maybe 1-2 other cars. So if something does happen you can get seriously fucked. I was in a big truck too, so the I didn't really feel the bumps like you would in a small call. Certainly seems doable at least where I was, but the roads are dodgy further north from what I understand.

I never said I wanted my own business nor that it was easy to start.

I'm just saying that what fuzzy is doing imho is hardly work. IMHO being able to take months away from something, and causally 'run' it is not working. nor does it sound hard.

Also please have contingency plans. You will likely break down in the middle of nowhere. You will likely get robbed. You will get extorted by cops. You will have a great story to tell your grand kids.
Oh, and "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."
 
Are you intending on running down the Atlantic or Pacific coast (Argentina or Chile). Left or right after you cross the canal? Best also check with US Embassies for recommendation on routes

That's what I'd be most afraid of happening. Brand new car, places that guns really rule, no civilization nearby, just a recipe for losing said new car, and hopefully that's all.

That's one reason I suggested an older vehicle, like a Jeep, but "new" under the hood.
 
Where do you plan to go after South America? I can see a lot more problems in Africa or Asia, especially if you aren't careful with route planning.

Like someone else said, you should probably contact US embassies along your route to avoid any major trouble zones and to let them know you're around if you get in serious trouble.
 
Have you been to expedition portal yet FBB?

People have done the round the world trip in 40's VW vans, Diesel 199x's Dodge pickups, boats, RV's, low clearance Subby WRX's ... you can do it in ANYTHING.

The biggest thing you want to look out for is international support, or you'll be suffering when you need work done on your vehicle. They WILL break down after how much you'll be driving.

I have been planning my own trip...for the last 1-2 years. I have a 2006 xterra off road edition, full frame, solidly built, can sleep inside the SUB (2 of us), and easily moddable... OK international support. I get 20~ mpg on the highway, unleaded, not diesel. unleaded fuel is just as common all over the world as diesel is ... I could on about this topic...

but possibly add a roof top tent....or nix that, and build a spot to sleep inside the truck.
 
I've done long distance travel by motorcycle myself so I understand the appeal, but bringing the bike seems like it's only going to add complication with little benefit. At the end of the day you are traveling by car and you'll only be able to use the bike for short excursions. It's just another thing to break or get stolen and carrying it will put more stress on an already marginally capable vehicle.

I also think you are putting way too much emphasis on fuel economy. The difference between a 15mpg vehicle and a 30mpg vehicle will be at most $2000 over the course of your trip. Considering you are willing to take the big hit that will come from using a brand new $20K+ car for this adventure, I don't see why that's so critical.

That's the thing. If Top Gear and Long Way Round have taught me anything it's that you can use almost any vehicle for off road travel if you're willing to deal with the cost and inconvenience of having shit break in the middle of nowhere. But if you are buying a new vehicle specifically for the trip there's no reason not to optimize your choice.
