The Philips Acoustic Edge Is Great!

Just yesterday I replaced my SB Live! with an AE. There is a pretty substantial difference in sound quality when listening to music and gaming. A lot of people say the difference is minimal (For music at least), but I totally disagree. There is infinitely more depth to music. It still sounds pretty digital, but hey, when listening to music on the computer it is GOING to sound digital no matter what card is used. Bottom line, for $50 at Circuit City you cannot buy a better card. The Audigy was $100 and the Turtle Beach was $80. Excellent deal, excellent sound.

Yep Philips AE is an excellent card, also for the price you pay it`s amazing value for money as well, sound quality with Philips cards has always been top notch.

🙂

I noticed a huge difference myself when I switched! People say speakers make more of a difference, but for me it was the card. I've found that everything Creative makes seems to suck bad. Currently I'm using a tbsc because I had minor compatability problems with the PAE in winnt based OS's with an amd via chipset, but I still prefer the AE's sound.

I really like the AE! The new Seismic Edge cards (the PSC705 versions) are great too. They're 6 channel cards and are great for building systems on a budget. You can usually find them OEM boxed for $15-25. It's just too bad that the AEs are falling off the face of the planet. 🙁 If you look on Pricewatch there are only a few stores left that sell them.

Neener Neener Neener!! 😀😀

Seriously though, these Philips cards are great cards, and I wish more people would consider them when choosing a soundcard. 🙂

My friends system got killed by lightning and he is all happy cause he is replace his live platinum with an audigy. I told him those cards are crap compared to what you can get but he wont listen. Mabey my next upgrade will be a pae from my tbsc

I'm looking at the PC705 seismic edge and 706 acoustic edge, and I can't see any differences. Is there any reason to get the 706 if I'm just playing games? Hooking this up with Klipsch's 5.1 system

Dug I believe the only difference is the Philips AE has S/PDIF Digital input & output, the Philips SE has only S/PDIF Digital output,so no real difference in the real world,so yes could go with the SE version and save yourself some money.

Yep. I have to admit that the AE is currently the favorite of my sound cards (I own or have used almost all the commercial level sound cards out there). Wasn't alway that way though. I wasn't so impressed with it about two years when it first came out. The drivers sucked and the CPU overhead was massive compared to my old SBLive. What improvements I gained over the SBLive at that time was not worth the headache. It wasn't until recently that I decided to give it another try with the current v1.89 drivers. I was amazed at how much of an improvement they were. If I had to choose between my AE, my Audigy, and my Santa Cruz as the only sound card to own right now, I'd probably pick the AE. Now the current drivers still has some minor bugs, ie. the occasional garbled sound with some games like UT and NHL2002 that requires a game restart, but other than, they're pretty solid.

The only thing that concerns me is that Philips sound cards are quickly disappearing from all the shelves of the major dealers in my area (MA). Circuit City has had them priced for clearance at $49.95 for months now and they are not replacing what they sell. Ditto for BestBuy, CompUSA, MicroCenter, etc. etc.. It seems that they are all dropping the Philips series of sound cards in favor of Creative and Guillemot, with maybe Turtle Beach still hanging on in most places. Hopefully, this does not lead to Philips leaving the sound card market due to poor sales. Would hate to not have any more driver updates.
