I'm looking to buy 2 heavy-duty UNIX servers with powerhouse force. Combined, they must be able to handle several thousand hits and several hundred concurrent users. I'm planning to run IBM's Universal Database DB2 on the server, using Perl's DBI and DBD::DB2 modules. Any particular servers in mind?

486? Yea right!!!!! 486SX will be the choice. Don't forget to get a 400meg hard drive. They are pretty good!!!

How about a 24Way 840 Series IBM AS/400 with 8Gigs of RAM?

our 12 way at work I think has 4gig of RAM and handles anywhere from 300-3000 concurrent users (we have about 4000 users, but probably not all of them logged in at once)

It should only cost about 3-5 million (after disk units are added)

I'm pretty sure it can run a version of AIX unix to.

I'd probably look into something from Sun. Maybe quad Xeons running Linux or Solaris x86, but Sun has some nice low-mid range servers.

Have a look at Sun's Enterprise 3500-6500 series.
The E3500 is the "low end" of these, its an eigth way system, and the E6500 is the highest one of these, with upto 30 CPU's.

Of course if you feel like going on a spending spree, you could pick up two StarFire's :)
