I mean the movie and not the election. (That would be the Perfect Hurricane with all that hot air)

Anybody see it?
Worth buying?

Missed it in the theaters and was wondering if I should buy it or not.

I've heard it is worth seeing. Rent first. I have also heard that the book is FAR superior. --But isn't that always the case?

I bought it last week and had not seen it. I can say this,, if you like other Wolfgang Peterson films ( Das Boot, In the Line of Fire ) you will like it for sure. The effects are pretty damn awesome in my opinion and the plot is good. You have to realize this movie is not going to have a happy ending though otherwise you may be disapointed. I was happily surprised with it.

DD-

Already read the book and really liked it. It is like a mini education in seamanship, ships, fishing, economics and a few other things. No real plot, more like a narrative. Very few movies better than the book and I expect that this whole movie is based on only a few pages of the original.

Chef-

Loved DAS BOOT and even have the double set of tapes in German with subtitles. Saw it dubbed in English also and it seems to lose a lot that way. Peterson is cool.

Thanks, guys

The book is supposed to be a narrative of events surrounding the sword boat industry, sea life, and the large storm (of 91 I think) that gives it the name. (didn't read it)

The movie focuses on one boat of swordfish fishermen and what happens to them when this huge storm comes along. It also shows a lot of what the Coast Guard goes through to save lives during a crisis like that and that alone is worth seeing on the big screen.

Try to go watch it without learning too much about what is going to happen and you will walk away more satisfied overall (IMO). If I knew how it was going to end before seeing it, I wouldn't have liked it as much as I did...since the end suprised me.

Everyone that I have talked to said that it was a disappointment... wanna know what an awesome movie is???

Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with Jim Carrey... it is an AWESOME movie... of course it won't replace, The Santa Clause, or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, but it is a good movie for sure...

Cheesy ending? It's a true story, for goodness sake!!

I didn't see the movie, because I read the book first, and movies are usually dissapointments to those who read the books first. However, I can tell you that the book was awesome. If the movie was at least as half as good as the book, it should be pretty decent.

they all died. Thats as far as the true story went.

The true life woman that was in the second boat even canned it a bit. I thought it was bad. I've used torches before and I know there is no way that one would stay lit under water..or even in a stiff breeze. Too much a bad action movie and not enought good plot.

Loved DAS BOOT and even have the double set of tapes in German with subtitles

I have the same tapes :)

My husband bought the movie before we had ever seen it. We both thought it was very entertaining. The ending is a little cheesy, but overall a good movie. It wasn't one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, but it was good. I'd watch it again.

I thought it was a blast IN THE THEATRES! I forgot about it as I was walking out and could care less if I see it again.

It's worth getting if you want something better than "Twister" to show off your home theatre with.

my god people...what have you been smoking. the Perfect Storm was a horrible, horrible movie. I watched the other day and remembered feeling homicidal shortly afterwards. i would've killed the manager of the movie theatre had i paid money to see it in theatres.

god, the movie parallelled hollywood cheese similar to that of Armageddon (or however you spell it..not really interested in its spelling at the moment) and we all know how awful that movie was. for christ's sake, don't waste your money on this movie. here's a user comment from the imdb database that i feel sums up this movie:

I know I can't be the first one to think of that line. Let's see, there's no character development and a lot of cliches and a meaningless time consuming sub plot about people on this really small boat. This all to me equals a not to good movie. I admit I did enjoy some of the storm. It was a cool little thrill ride. But that's all "The Perfect Storm" is. It's just a boring movie, with some thrills in the middle and then a really sappy ending with Diane Lane. Acting wasn't to bad. Although Lane's attempt at an accent is failed. Overall it's just another boring style over substance adventure flick. 4 out of 10

Thanks again for all the replies.

Thought the special effects and sound would be a good show on my home theater. Getting tired of a lot of my old standbys.

Replies were mostly what I thought they would be but nice to check.

I was rather dissapointed... Gladiator is on DVD now, I would get that if you are looking for a GREAT movie. The special effects were nice, but the plot was WAY too predictable.

Eh. It was an okay-er. Sentimentality really bugged me all the way through; if they removed that it would've been a great movie. But, alas, you have to appeal to the sensiti...err...female part of movie-goers. :)

I say get it from netflix that way you can decide for yourself. (Unless you're not a subscriber. heh)

I rented it on DVD. I would never have bought it, but some if it wasn't bad (the water for ex.) The plot was lame and predictable. Clooney is a moron and poor actor, like he is in every film, but it's okay if there is absolutely nothing else new to rent.

I second nicene's comments. Terribly sappy. The effects were OK though, but not enough to drive the movie.

Hated it.

THIS IS A SPOILER . . . warning - do not read further if you have not seen the movie and plan to anyway . . .

In the end, AFTER they turn and the big wave swamps the boat - isn't it coming from the wrong direction? After they TURN, the hurricane swell is coming from behind them. Yet this huge rogue wave is clearly coming from the other direction.

Anybody care to explain this?
