The Perfect Song

The Perfect Song

Music is a very emotional topic for most people because as we know music has an ability to touch us on a deeper level. While we may find something wonderful in one song another person may only see it as crap. So, I am not really here looking for acceptance of my song choice but to see what songs other people might choose and why they would choose it.

My Perfect Song:

TOOL - Reflections
Album - Lateralus
Song #11
Length 11:07

There are many reasons why I feel this song is perfect. First off it is well constructed, the intro is almost four minutes long and during that time it builds beat on top of beat instrument on top of instrument but all keeping a harmony. It is done in a slow progression as not to rush the listener but instead to lead them. Second the lyrics, I wont post them but if you want to check them out you can go here. The lyrics in this song comprise themselves into a story of defeat and rebirth. As mentioned before the construction of the music helps mirror these emotions in the story extremely well.

Lyric Exerp:

So crucify the ego, before it's far too late
To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical,
And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.

Of course all of this is Just IMO. So, what's your perfect song?

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird

It's nine minutes of perfection. It builds from a feeling of remorse in the beginning to a feeling of relief at the end. Its lyrics aren't too specific, making it a good song for just about everyone (similar to Yesterday by The Beatles in this way). All of the guitar parts are badass, especially the last minute or so.

I was going to make a joke until you mentioned a TOOL song. Nonetheless :

Spinal Tap - Sex Farm
OR
Spinal Tap - Big Bottom

1) Gerorge Gershwin's Rhapsody in BLue

It is simply perfect if played well. Syncopatic style the like of which I have yet to see produced by anyone else.

THe sense of urgency, the sense of smugness...all the senses imaginable.....in a piece that always makes you feel good. Truely the most beautiful piece ever.

2) Sibelius' Violin concerto in D .....played pby Jacsha Heifetz...truely the most beautiful violin solo/orchestral picee ever.

But seriously, I dont think I would have chosen Reflection for a perfect song by Tool. I'd go with the song "Aenema" if I had to pick one from them. MJK absolutely hypnotizes me with his voice.

for me, could be one of any number of Rush songs. Rush is the only band i know of where every single song is a deep philosophical episode, except maybe stuff from the first album. The lyrics are mega deep, optimisitc, and the music has that rock and roll spirit which captures the emotion of us dramatic types.

So here are my top 5 perfect Rush songs that I like, along with some lyric snippets.

1) The Enemy Within (Part I of Fear) - "To you is it movement, or is it action? Is it contact or just reaction? And you.. revolution... Just resistance? Is it living or just existence? Yeah you.. it takes a little more persistance to get up and go the distance - I'm not giving in." (This song probably has the fastest bass part of any rush song, it sounds like crazy video game music)

2) The Weapon (Part II of Fear)
"He's not afraid of your judgement
He knows of horrors worse than your Hell
He's a little bit afraid of dying
But he's a lot more afraid of your lying
And the things that he fears are a weapon to be held against him..."

3) Witch Hunt (Part III of Fear)
"Ignorance and prejudice and Fear walk hand in hand..." (This is a good simple song to sing in the shower)

4) Natural Science (the whole song)
(putting any one snippet here would diminish the whole song, simply amazing, profound, lyrics)

5) Something for Nothing (The different stages live version is the best, this is the bridge)
"What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song"

and to round out my top 10...
6) The Fountain of Lamneth
7) Anthem
8) Tears
9) The Pass
10) Driven

Anything not Tool...

"The Perfect Song" Is subject to emotion and use...

Ill Nino - How can I live
Goldfinger/Simple Plan/Mest/Good Charlotte - The Innocent
Soil - Breaking me down
Korn - Y'all want a single
Spineshank - Synthetic or Asthmatic

I dunno, just listing some of the songs I just put on my mp3 player :/

Happy Birthday song has stood the test of time for hundred of years. It doesn't get any simpler than this 😉

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear <insert name>
Happy birthday to you

How do you pick a "perfect song"? They're so subjective...

I'll just throw down a couple I really like:

U2 - With or Without You
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under the Bridge
