The people's car [VW] goes upscale for luxury sales

I love the Phaeton 🙂. But I still think that they should have let Audi handle the luxury-segment. This will just create confusion and competition inside the company. How are they going to differentiate Audi and VW is VW moves upmarket? And if VW moves upmarket, how will they handle the lower end of the market in USA? In Europe they have Skode to handle that, but they don't have such brand in USA. Maybe they could export Skoda to USA, but it would be difficult since it would be a new and strange brand. Building it up would take time and money.

Yeah, VW needs to stick to the cheaper stuff and let Audi handle the upper echelon. VW is going to start getting into brand identity problems like GM is facing with its MANY [US] marques (GM, Chevy, Saab, Cadillac, Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, Buick); not to mention Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden

"It wasn't my decision," says Bernd Pischetsrieder, the former BMW chairman who replaced Piech atop VW in May. "When I joined the company, he knew what I was all about. And he knew there were things I would do differently."

Like not building the Phaeton, for a start. Or vesting the sum total of the VW Group's automotive expertise in the next-generation Audi A8 instead of creating an all-new, super-rich niche for the VW brand, which nearly disappeared from the U.S.

Is it a bad thing when incoming CEO of the company is skeptical and doesn't have happy happy vibes on the project?

this seems to me to be a pretty bad idea. as others have said, what about audi?

i thought that's what audi was supposed to do. we have a volkswagen/audi dealer in princeton. it's the perfect complement. it hits all the markets except SUV and pickups.

anyway. i think they are in for some hurt.

i'm not really sure why they're doing the phaeton either. i know its bad-arse though.

EDIT: they might have the same problem as ford with the 500. no one really thinks "where should i buy a german-luxo boat?... mercedes? bmw? audi? the place i bought that boxy jetta 15 years ago?". it stops at audi. of course, up until about 8 years ago it stopped at bmw. and up until about 15 years ago it stopped at mercedes. so maybe vee dub could get in on the action. theres already people rolling in for the $40,000 W8.

Who the hell is gonna buy a Ford that looks like a VW for $30,000 when you can get the real deal for the same amount of money? Or an even better A4 for a little bit more? 😀

didn't ford say it was aiming for $26 like the toyota? maybe its 27 like knightbreed says. anyhow, if i was gonna spend $32K and had to choose between passat and a4, i'd get the passat because it has a fine j-lo ass while the a4 has some man-ass look to it. fugly.

The Touauourourouoauroureg will sell pretty well, because it's an SUV, and a pretty damn nice one at that (although I don't really care for SUV's myself anyway). The Phaeton has limited numbers, and I think they'll sell them all. But consider what they are doing: they're testing the waters. If it doesn't work out, VW isn't going to go under or anything drastic like that. And it will work in Europe regardless; people LOVE vw's over there, and BMW's can be had brand new for 20K.
