The Pentium G3258 deals thread

Serious question - are any of these combos that Newegg sells these days, still overclockable? From what I heard, nearly all of the mobo mfgs "fell in line" with Intel's "demands", and released BIOS updates, that no longer allow non-Z OCing of the G3258.

Edit: Just checked my GA-H81M-DS2V v1.0 board for BIOS updates. Still at F6, which actually enhanced my overclocking ability pretty nicely, rather than removed it. I guess not all mfg's have removed non-Z OCing.

Well here's a review from 12-3-2015 on Newegg:

Pros: Actually a decent overclocker
Steady Voltage
Overclocking on a B Chipset!?
MSI
Click Bios

Other reviews also mention it overclocks well. 🙂

I'd say all of them are still overclockable as they haven't removed the older firmware from the download pages. I know the latest firmware for my Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H breaks G3258 overclocking (the update specifically lists it's for the Pentium Anniversary Edition). My understanding is that it's for compatibility with whatever check Intel has in place within Windows 10. But there's a simple workaround by deleting a .dll file to allow you to use an overclocked G3258 with older firmware along with Windows 10.

The only downside I've found with this Gigabyte B85 board is that it restricts CPU voltage to 1.2v. I wonder if that's the case for all Gigabyte H81 and B85 boards.

Interesting. My board is a GA-H81M-DS2V v1.0, and it appears to be discontinued, which may be why there is no new BIOS to remove G3258 OCing. The newest BIOS, F6, enhances overclocking, and removed the 1.2v vcore limit issue present with the older F5 BIOS.

Try searching. The price of these are not going to go down by much if at all. Ebuyer uk has gone up to £58, Dabs and Amazon on £53.
If the skylake Pentiums can be clocked these would be the cheap cpu to go for, not haswell.

If I were in the market for a budget set up I would probably try a skylake pentium myself. I still have a G3258 and still love it but its old haswell tech. Virtuallarry has been playing about with skylakes, dont know why he is still recommending the G3258.

You do know that Intel is shutting down non-K SKL OC, right? New BIOSes, older "SKY OC" BIOSes were pulled off the site, etc., new microcode in newly-produced CPUs.

Shame on me I guess. I went ahead and bought a G3258 with an H81 MSI board. Not from this deal thread, as I needed Mini-ITX. If it doesn't overclock, I won't be broken up about it as I most likely won't do that anyway. Just figure if the cost was the same as the G3260 and G3250, why not by the unlocked chip if I ever repurpose it later.

It might work. Many MSI mobos do:

I feel you though, when I did my G3258 build in December it was a bitch finding a Mini ITX z97 mobo.

Well, received the parts last night. It looks like the board will do it. It's just an H81 chipset, but appeared to be capable of adjusting the multiplier. I did not do that as it'll just be an HTPC for now, so no need for super high speed.

It was something like 62 for the board and 63 for the CPU on amazon, for a total of 125. Fair enough in my book.

The mobo seems to be hit or miss with the reviews. Almost 50% DOA or died soon after. Maybe there was a bad batch though and ASUS has worked it out by now.

Yeah I figured out the same I got the 99$ deal with the b85mg r2.0 and the g3258 and the first one was dead but the second one is working nicely I havnt tried overclocking on it yet though.
