The PC game of the week is... Interstate '76

I bought Interstate '76 off of Amazon for $1.95. I had lost the original copy I purchased back in 1997. Good game, although the graphics are a bit clunky even for 1997 standards. The Gold patch offers Direct 3D and Glide support, but it seems to be limited to 640x480 while software mode can go to 1024x768. If anyone remembers, is there a config file or registry setting I can tweak to increase the resolution?

The music was pretty great. I don't think I ever played the game all the way through, but it was a lot of fun.

I had heard a lot of good things about this game around that time and was planning to get the sequel (Interstate 82), but all the reviews said it sucked so I didn't bother. Maybe I should still look for the original.

I got the game installed in Windows Vista x64. Since the installer is 16-bit I had to install it on Windows XP first and copy it over to Vista. The only problem with that is that it's missing a registry key. The key is under local machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/appdata (I believe, going from memory) and the entry is i76.exe. You have to export that from XP and import that into Vista, but first you have to change the path where it says localmachine/software to localmachine/software/wow64somethingsomething (can't remember the name, but if you browse the registry you can find the correct name there). Once the registry file has been modified it can be imported and the game can be played normally. The only problem I have with the game now is the inability to change the resolution in D3D and 3Dfx mode (using a glide emulator). I don't even know if that's possible.

Man this was a good game. Unfortunately, I never bought it cause I was too young/poor, so all I have are demo experiences which rocked. Nothing was funner than shooting the driver of another car or just ramming them to death. Hope they do a remake cause the graphics are way too old now.

I got the game in a bundle and was psyched to play it (I loved the whole '70's TV show look) but I couldn't get a the hang of controlling the car (I don't normally like or play driving games), which made the game hard as hell. So I never finished it, unfortunately, which is something I hate to do. If they had some sort of easy mode, I probably would have done OK.

Loved '76.........'82..........eh.....not so much. It would be awesome to get an upgraded version. Hell, there's a lot of games I'd like to see made for newer rigs, but still keeping the 'old' feel (if that's even possible)

I76 was a great game. We used to play it at LAN parties all the time. Pistol kills were the best -- car rolls to a stop with the horn blaring. :)

I liked that game, but when it comes to ramming other cars and "battling it out with cars" I prefer the Vigilant 8 games (which I believe are superior to the Twisted Metal series).

I tried to reinstall this game recently on XP and it wouldn't run correctly...

The game would run...however when ever I ran into something it would crash.

Was thinking about trying to install VMWare and then installing windows 98 and playing it that way...

Anyone done something like this?

I've been able to run it on Vista x64 crash free. Did you install the Gold upgrade?

At least you guys had the game. I always wanted Interstate '72 but I could never afford it so I got Streets of SimCity instead, which turned out to be craptastic. Luckily, it came with a great manual (no joke...SimCopter and Streets of SimCity came with book-size manuals that were actually pretty fun to read).

I don't think I did install any patches...I saw that there were two available but couldn't get one of them to work...maybe it was the NITRO patch?

If you have a valid link to the Gold upgrade that would be cool to try out...

I think I have an Interstate compilation pack that has all the games; can't say I've ever installed them though but do remember they got pretty good reviews.

The Gold Edition patch will upgrade the standard I76 to the gold edition. You can download the patch here. They split it up in 5 sections to make it easier to get by dialup users back then. Just download all 5 parts and place them in the same directory. Run the executable and that will combine all 5 files into one file. After that, run the patch file.

I loved this game. I tried playing it a couple years back but could never get it or the "Gold" or "Nitro" packs to install correctly on XP.
