It's pathetic that you can get a driver's license and not know this.

Why? It's not really that important of a function of the car. It certainly doesn't affect the way people drive.

Most people just leave it on all the time anyway.

Maybe I'm jsut wierd, but I think that to be licensed to operate a vehicle, you should have to know how to operate it.

Would you fly on a plane on which the pilot said, "What does that red button over there do? I guess it's not important since the plane can fly without pushing it..."?

not all cars have this feature, mine DOES NOT so unless you memorize every detail about EVERY car you wouldent know

If your car doesn't have an overdrive button, you're not likely to ask this question in the first place, are you? The OP's car does have this button, and you'd figure he'd at least be able to operate his own car before he starts barrelling down the road at 70mph, right?

If you got a car WITH an O/D button, and RTFM, you'd know what it is.

Yeah this would be one of those times where you could RTFM.

In our 90 accord, it's sports mode vs. normal mode. Normal is the OD whereas sports mode keeps it in lower gear (for more acceleration, etc.).

In my Rodeo, D4 is OD where as D3 is regular drive. Then there's D2 and 1/Low
