The Generic Drug Rip Off
Please note this article has a second page

Wow, what a racket. We have this picture in our head of an FDA that works to protect the American people, when in reality, and in collusion with Big Pharma, it does the very opposite. How anyone can read this, look at the numbers, and still support the status quo is beyond me.

Yes these kinds of things need to be fixed and the cost can drastically fall for health care here.

That reads like a bad Magazine Ad. There's very good reason for requiring Generics to need to prove themselves. You just let anyone start producing Generics and all kinds of crap will result.

lmao. And people wonder why some Americans are maligned abroad when they pretend to know something about government before revealing they never even graduated college.

Actually, there should be far MORE regulation of generics.

There are many, many credible accounts of generics that don't produce the same therapeutic effect as the branded drug, primarily because although generics DO typically match the chemical forumation of the branded drug, the inactive ingredients can drastically affect the therapeutic action.

One well-documented example is generics for the branded drug Wellbutrin XL (bupropion). It turns out that the inactive ingredients of the branded drug are forumated for a specific time-release behavior, whereas the generics don't match that time-release behavior, which effectively makes the generics worthless for many users. Here's a link that provides a summary of the problem, and the FDA's intention to now re-review these particular generics.

FDA intends to re-review

The problem is, up until now, the FDA has based it's approval of generics almost exclusively on the basis of the active ingredients, and the FDA does not remotely have sufficient resources to do more thorough reviews of all generics (there can be 20 or 30 different manufacturers in different countries all over the globe who produce different generics for the same drug). Thus, this notion that the FDA is regulating generics TOO much is absurd.

You apparently graduated from college without knowing that college and knowledge are not exclusive to one another, thus proving that college does not necessarily impart knowledge.

Thanks for playing, Poster Formerly Known as Evan Plebe.

obama is the only one using that status quo line. Most American want reform... not just obama reform... lets keep that straight.

Most industrialized countries offer universal high quality care for about 11% GDP. In the US, we spend 16% of our GDP and have millions who are completely without insurance or are underinsured.

Whoever stands to benefit from the extra 5% of our GDP has billions of reasons to fight tooth and nail against any kind of change

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

The FDA is fucked up beyond belief. It really needs a complete overhaul and hopefully it will get one that makes it the objective safety net it is supposed to be.
