Surprised to see Gosling nominated for Half Nelson. Good movie, but kind of slow.

I thought Little Miss Sunshine was somewhat overrated. I think United 93 should have been nominated instead of it.

I was suprised that Paul Greengrass was nominated for Best Director for United 93 and then disappointed that it didnt get a nod for Best Picture.

I'm also glad it was nominated for Film Editing and it should definitely win for that.

I wonder if they were afraid of it getting the sympathy vote.. when I saw it for best director I just assumed they would win because it would make good television.

Yea I wonder that much too. It is an amazing movie tho.

Thought Children of Men deserved WAY more credit, especially for Alfonso Cuarón. Hell, he deserved Best Director just for setting up that incredible 1-shot action sequence.

Granted, I couldn't care less generally about what's nominated and what isn't, because the Oscars do an incredible job of awarding mediocrity and shunning originality.

I can't wait for the award show...I've been pretty good this year, catching probably 3 out of 5 of the Oscar nominated movies, at least (other than the shorts and whatnot). I might be in Milwaukee though on show night...hmmm.

So did I. My wife and I both thought it was an OK comedy, but that's all. I was shocked when they nominated that little girl, and even more shocked when it got the nod for best picture.

The Academy can suck it!

I luckily have the opportunity here in DC to view all sorts of NEW foreign films...made by no-name directors with no-name actors...all of which speak more beautifully about the human condition than 95% of the crap that Hollywood puts out. It is so refreshing to see non-Hollywood-industrial-machine movies!

I mean, take a recent foreign film that many people here know about: Downfall (Der Untergang). Bruno Ganz' portrayal of Hitler is what made that movie. And why was he not nominated for an Oscar? Because the Academy is nothing but a club of stuck-up, snobby, rich Americans who have no taste and who are too full of themselves to consider real works of art from elsewhere.
