What is your opinion? Coldfusion? Nanotechnology that could program down to the biological level and even rid cancer? Or the discovering of the Grand Unified Theory?

My personal opinion, would be the invention of a Truth/Lie detector that is 100% accurate. That can do it's reading from a distance (see observable distance), either from reading brainwave activities (if what they're saying is accessing the reasoning area of the brain, memory area of the brain, or imagination area of the brain... or could read eye movements, lip twitches, change in heat flush around the face... something, anything, but it can detect what you say if it's the truth of a lie with 100% certainty.

I say this is so important, because i think this would eliminate 95% of all the crimes we have... and we would never ever have another person convicted on a false conviction, and we would never have a criminal loose because they had good lawyers or because there was a flaw in how they were arrested. And it would cut court costs down dramatically. Even such moral issues as cheating on your spouses would almost be eliminated.

But what i think would be the biggest effect would be WORLD PEACE. Leaders could never lie to other leaders again, because the lie would be detected automatically. There would never be another invasion of a country, at least one that the world wouldn't know about it ahead of time, because they would never be able to hide it. Politicians would entirely have to be honest, because all fibs would be detected. And dictators like those in Iran would be discovered for who they really are by the people, because the people would know when they were lying or not.

I think such a device is bound to be invented sooner or later. I think that if somebody as wealthy as Bill Gates were to commit 10 billion dollars to the research, i think it could be created within a generation.

I think you are being naiive if you feel a perfect lie detector will bring about world peace. Such an idealistic concept, however noble, is doomed to failure when confronted with the perverse reality of human nature.

Seriously... how can you still be pissed at your fellow man and want to invade his country when you can go get some booty 24 hours a day?

Because it is human nature to lie, from the very small to the very big. Hell, we even lie to ourselves! Everyone would be effected by your machine, and it would probably end relationships and end trust between those people.

But you still haven't explained anything. How the hell would a Truth/Lie detector (NOT just a lie detector) end relationships and trust between people??? I seriously find this interesting.

If anybody actually posts something, such as another idea or why my idea isn't good, can you actually post more than ONE line.

Some ideas are just so great yet so simple that they only need one line.

ie: punch to the face over the internet.

Yeah, those were my top contenders too. But they really wouldn't make society better imo. I mean, they would certainly make life more comfortable, but there would still be a lot of the evils in the world. I think if you can remove people's ability to hide behind evil/wrong acts, then people won't do them. It's the reason why it's a proven fact that security cameras on school grounds reduce school violence... they can't get away from it, so they don't do it. True, crimes like those out of passion won't be eliminated, but people certainly wouldn't get away with it any longer... and that's not even the sad part. It's the people that are innocent but convicted of the crime that really saddens me.

When i was in prison, there was a guy known simply as Gramps to everybody... because he was this old 80 year old in a wheelchair, who did nothing all day but play chess. He's been incarcerated for about 10 years, and from the very first day, swore that he wasn't involved in the crime, and that he didn't do it. He still had years to go left, and EVERYBODY told him to just tell the parole board that he was guilty of the crime, and he would be paroled. Everybody told him this, family, other inmates, even the correctional officers. He would have been released within 8 years without even seeing a parole board if he had admitted to the crime (in Canada you are automatically paroled if you do 2/3 of your time, UNLESS you don't admit to the crime). But he never, and he eventually died in prison. You have to admit to the crime to get parole because without admission, it shows you have no remorse.

A really cheap, easily accessible energy source would change the human and possibly the non-human world

I think teleportation would completely change the world. I will be inventing that thank you ;)

About the truth/lie detector getting world peace, I'm sure you know some people taht would be a lot more pissed at you if they knew what you really thought about them. :p I think lies are a necessary evil in this world. Lies and manners bleed together too much hehe.

A cost effective energy->matter, matter->energy converter. One unit could do both, or split them up. Whatever.
