Slowest computer i've found so far is probably the sun machines. I don't know enough about sun tech to give specs though.

think they'll probably wait for the spec's bulb to die and then buy a new one. the spec's are worth a lot i think.

Old technology = your school is smart with money (or VERY poor). My university upgrades computers that don't even NEED to be upgraded, and just for the general patrons too! Last year they bought P4 3.2GHz, 1GB Ram comps and replaced them with dual core comps this year. They also spent $100,000s on buying and meticulously configuring the library main floor to accomodate the computers LAST year, and this summer they tore up the whole floor, replaced the ceiling, and had to reconfigure the computers in the exact same setup spending countless more (and the ceiling, comps, etc. did not need replacing). That's what happens with a university with a $3.5 billion endowment, though I wish they'd give away scholarships instead of throwing money away.

Budget problems?

to some companies data is worth thousands, a new computer running XP can be baught with as little as 600 bucks if not less

i understand that they may not be able to get the latest and greatest, but still using DOS?

they should at least strive for win. 98 by now

Obviously the data on these computers isn't worth 1000s. Because if it were, they would be investing in better machines.
