I would like to point out that I said nothing of comparing a XP1600 to a Celeron 1.7 in anything but price.

In proc comparison, If you actually read what a wrote, was between a Cely 1.7 with a Radeon 7200 and a 1.2 Duron with a g256 DDR.

Please dont take my words out of context. And still, for the money, my XP system is without a doubt the better system.

i'd get
athlon 1700+ - $50
epox 8rda - $85
256MB PC2700 -$35
TNT2 or used voodoo 3 :p - $10
or if you plan on playing other games.. radeon 8500LE $75

that'd be way overkill for what you're doing... really you just need a 750MHz Duron with used KT133a mobo and 128MB PC133 ram and TNT2 all for $60 or so?

Now here is a fellow who is realistic.

Slicker is going to have to get more ambitious before he will see an application that would hold him back. I think Slicker was carried away when he saw how prices have dropped in 5 years. The high performance of those 2400 processors is not going to be noticeable until you do something more demanding. The advantage of building it yourself is that you can add and switch as your ambitions change, and adapt your system to your needs. By doing that you save money and sacrifice practically nothing. People over-buy ridiculously when they try to assemble a system that "will do anything" . When you build it yourself, you don't have to do it that way. Save your ammunition. Get the $50 processor, if that will do. You will have an extra $150 to use later on a super-duper processor or video card if you need one at a later date.

TNT2's and voodoo 3's won't work on new boards, 2x cards are no longer supported. I would get a radeon 8500, good card good price. Or a geforce 3. Very well priced cards.

All nforce2 boards support AGP 2.0 (2x and 4x) and AGP 3.0 (4x and 8x) graphics cards.

Yep, but only if they're 1.5v cards.
