MS is using their Azure servers for XBL now I believe, so there really shouldn't be a problem. They pride themselves on no downtime (and the only downtime article I can even find on them was from a leap year bug - those still exist?). I'd say they are pretty stable. Now, bandwidth might be lower due to demand, but the update isn't very big (according to MS), so it shouldn't take all night. At worst, it will be like a PS3 update. >_>
You can't contradict yourself in back to back sentences like that. :p

The downtime I found is that the cloud servers will get updated frequently and can interrupt online games using those server resources when the system restarts. I don't know what they mean by frequently.

Currently to my tv I have a Chromecast and a jailbroke Apple tv 2 hooked up. I know Xbox One acts as a universal remote, how should I hook this up? Could I hook the Chromecast and ATV to an hdmi switcher and then go into the hdmi in on the One or should I just hook the three devices up to the tvs hdmi ports?

Since kinect works as an IR blaster I don't think you need to run through the XB1 system. I don't know enough about how this all works though.

It depends on whether you want the snap ability. From what I understand, the X1 won't be able to control the AppleTV or the Chromecast the same way that you see in demo videos. With a cable box, it just uses HDMI-CEC or the IR blaster to send the commands for channel changes and stuff. However, with the AppleTV, you have to select the app that has the content that you want to watch.

That's why I don't see it being useful for anything but snapping.

skype to skype is free. I think you can call actual phones through skype though.

Yeah, Skype calls to other Skype users is free (however, I believe you have to buy a license to host group video calls, not sure). Skype calls to phone numbers costs per month, although it is very cheap for international calls I believe.

I just saw that XB1 supports live t.v. Does that mean I would need a cable card for my Verizon Fios? or can I just plug in the cable, and voila! no need to rent my fios box anymore?

I don't know if all data is out there yet. Ideally, no you wouldn't need a cable box for Fios. I am not sure if they have support for it yet though. Eventually, they might end up with it.

Myself, I don't have any interest in having my Xbox change channels for me, I just love the functionality of having the Xbox on at all times combined with the pass-thru so I can swap between games and TV at a whim. This is exactly why I've 100% decided to go all digital. I don't know how much I'll use the voice versus the controller, it really depends on if the controller is nearby.

I have DirecTV, which I'm pretty sure isn't compatible with the built-in guide, which is fine. I just hope I can still say "watch TV" and it'll go there, then do all the snapping and still have the overlays for when friends log on and what-not. I'll still use my DirecTV remote like always.

It's going to be sweet.

So MS just released an official walkthrough of the Xbox One UI:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhe6jV-APwM

Have to say, despite not liking what MS has done with the XB1 up to this point, I'm impressed by this video. I don't need or want most of the features they are promoting here but it does look cool to say the least.

Kinect still looks creepy to me though. I love the tech but maybe it's my paranoia setting in.

damn i gotta say, that is pretty damn neat. finally got around to watching it. the way the camera followed that guy around in skype was pretty neat. although, i'm not sold on why they are making skype such a big deal because i personally have never once used it and i don't plan on using it just because its on xbox1.

the tv stuff on xbox1 though i do like more than i thought i would. that was cool just telling it what channel to go to. i've had fios for over a year now and i still don't know all of the channels i watch by number, especially the ones i don't watch too often but watch every now and then. i just know the range they are in.

the whole switching between things really fast is very impressive. the major gripe i had with the 360 dash was how slow and unresponsive it is, so it seems like a major step up.

one thing i noticed about that forza though (or how he kept saying it, "fortza") was the aliasing on the track borders. it's painful. i don't remember seeing that when i played the other day though, i wonder if that was an artifact of the game being 60fps but the camera maybe not being that fast.

Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean it's not a big deal to many. I don't use it, but I know a few friends that are really looking forward to Skype on the One. MS isn't stupid, they know their audience and they know what to push.

yeah i'm sure, i guess what i mean was that i personally don't use it myself so it's just not a big deal to me. i also don't know anyone who uses it either, online or off.

There actually is a bit of a t sound in Forza. In Italian a z most often makes a "ts" sound but can also sometimes make a "dz" sound.

Forza means "force."

I've never used skype. People in the household use facetime, but I never have. I Just hate seeing video while "talking on the phone. I also don't plan on buying an Xbone. All that said, i thought the skype demo was very good, seeing full HD vid of the other side and then projected back through a large screen is quite cool.

Yeah that video was definitely cool, but imo if I had a choice I'd completely dump any social media stuff at all. I only want it to play games, but that's me. Apps like netflix and stuff are cool, and i like streaming, but beyond that all this new stuff on both the ps4 and xbox one arent really for me.

I wonder if the X1 is adaptive to different sorts of commands. For example, when they took the Skype call while watching TV, could I just say, "Xbox, snap Skype" and have it answer and snap it to the side at once?

The biggest problem for me with The X1 and TV is that I get my TV through a HTPC. However, it's not just a HTPC as it also has a mid-range video card in it, so it's capable of playing games too. However, using the HDMI input on the X1 will introduce lag, so that's just not a good option. Also, the X1 cannot control Windows Media Center, which does seem rather silly. It would be nice to change channels or focus on channels in the guide via voice. At this time, I keep a printed copy of a spreadsheet on a clipboard in my living room that has my channels on it. It's actually numerical order side-by-side with channels in alphabetical order, which is the only way I can effectively find things. :p

I'm not really sure why you're dumping Netflix and the other apps under the social media umbrella. As far as I can tell, there's no Facebook or Twitter to be found. I'm not even sure you can post your videos straight to social media.

From what I've seen, Sony has touted built-in social media much more than MS, although I don't know to what extent, if any, either will have it at launch.
