I don't see anywhere that explains if you can do MP this way as well or what. Cause if it really works like that there is nothing to stop two guys from splitting cost on a single title and both playing as if it were two copies. That is lost game sales right there. Microsoft claims they are trying to help the developers etc. Get more cash? This will give them less.

i don't really know how much clearer they can make it.

You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

You're assuming your interpretation is correct. Further it isn't necessarily what will take place come launch. If MS goal is to protect publisher sales, "giving away" copies doesn't make sense, even on a limited basis.

Do you guys ever get tired of hearing yourself? There is almost nobody who likes what Microsoft is doing. There is a good reason for that and it isn't because they are doing anything remotely consumer friendly. Oh I can share my games? Thanks ms, I was never able to let my friend play my game before.

Once I lend out the disk it becomes locked down and I cannot loan it out or sell it outright now. That is consumer friendly? Hell no...

You're right! You can loan your games to a friend and play with him... oh wait. Can't do that. You can install your games to your HDD and never use the disc again... oh wait. Can't do that either. But those aren't consumer friendly, because Sony didn't do them.

Adding tons of Kinect features, all of which that can be turned off... nope, that is bad too.

So, besides the "omg no used games!!!! omg I am poor and buy a $400 system so I can 'save' $100 a year buying used games", "omg my internet might go out for more than a day once every 5 years", and the "omg what if MS shuts off their servers in 5 years, because that is likely that MS will go out of business or something stupid like that" arguments, there is really no issue other than gamers being whiny because the landscape is changing, again. PC gamers went through this a good while ago, and they whined, and then it ended up being better for everyone.

1. We don't know how much the games will cost or how they will drop in price compared to now with this new model.

2. People who complain games are too expensive and offset the price by selling used, probably haven't made the wisest of investments in purchasing a gaming console. They would be much better off buying a PS3 or 360, due to it being overall cheaper and a ton of games are available for cheap.

3. I was trying to highlight the absurdity most people are arguing against MS, despite them actually giving us useful features in exchange for this DRM / license model.

Technically no, and I suppose MS could surprise us by running frequent MEANINGFUL sales sort of like Steam. The DRM is pretty much just as bad as Steam (other than the much more restrictive offline mode), but people forgive Steam because at least you can get games for really cheap if you wait for a sale.

Can't help but think that, by restricting used games to "participating retailers," they're creating a situation where a small number of shops will be able to set prices without any real competition from smaller, independent sellers on Amazon and eBay. Basic economics.

Ah, so it's another "if you want to save money then you must be poor" argument. Please stop this, it makes you look like a complete asshole.

MS should be going all out to promote the actual useful things that you can do with the Xbox One, because there are at least a couple. The family sharing thing is nice, although allowing up to 10 people in a family circle belies the usefulness of the feature. If only one of those people can share a game from the "leader's" account at any given time, it doesn't matter how many people you allow in a circle. Still, it's something you can't do with any other console as far as I know.

The other useful feature is not having to get up and swap discs, but that's pretty minor. I can't remember if there are any other nice features resulting from the DRM.

MS has no impact on my life outside of their products I choose to use, most of which are pretty good. Outside of a few, such as MS Word which I loathe and Visual Studio 2012 that makes me want to kill myself, they make decent products.

So liking Steam and not trusting MS with a zero-competition monopoly is not hypocritical.

Edit: and from past history, MS has a tendency to get arrogant and lazy once they've "won" a battle. See for example the history of their Internet Explorer and Media Player development. Once they win, they lose interest until someone shows up to compete with them again. IE rotted for years until Firefox gained market share and made MS start competing again.

Good point. There have been several times when I picked up a game on Amazon because it was significantly cheaper than Steam. Amazon runs sales too, and Steam's non-sale prices aren't even that great. So when there's a game I want to get, I always shop around and maybe someone else is running a sale and Steam isn't.

In some cases, you can even link a non-Steam game to Steam if you so desire. This is admittedly giving up some freedom for some convenience, but it's completely optional.

Hell, just look at the Xbox One. The Xbox 360 "won" the current generation, at least early on, when Sony got cocky and overconfident and made arguably worse blunders than MS has this time around ($599 seriously?). So now they throw it on cruise control and assume everyone will just stick with them for the next generation, even though there's nothing keeping them there.

What monopoly? You will be able to buy games from any retailers. The publishers already dictate the prices. MS is making everything available through their store for DD and releasing discs to retailers (Gamestop, Amazon, BestBuy, etc.). There is no monopoly. At worst, it will be exactly like Steam in terms of game availability.

And yes, IE rotted for years, but they had literally zero competition. Netscape tried to beat MS by giving their browers (Navigator) away for free. That really backfired, because MS did the same and included it with Windows. It took almost a decade for something better to actually come out. MS isn't really being lazy with the Xbox One. Look at what they are doing with Xbox Live. They are moving in a different direction than Sony (pure gamers stance), but they haven't stopped innovating. It just isn't in areas "hardcore gamers" want.

I think it's disingenuous to say that Microsoft has thrown it into "cruise control". If anything, they've knocked it into another gear and possibly fucked up the transmission.

I can follow his point. The comparison is slightly different than what you're making it. Steam is a service on top of the PC platform. If you don't like what Steam is doing, you can purchase games from other services that operate on the PC platform. The Xbox 1 is it's own platform and service. You can't purchase games that don't utilize base MS policies (ex. used game policy) to play on the Xbox 1. If they were to allow other markets to sell games that run on their system (ex. how Android does it) and don't conform to their policies, then they would be on a level playing field with Steam.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I was talking about digital sales, since that's what Steam offers.

On PCs, digital sales are available from Steam, Origin, GoG, GreenMan, Desura, Humble, Amazon, etc. etc. ... and any developer who wants to put a download and paypal button up on their own $10-a-month website.

If you buy an X1, digital sales are available from: Microsoft.

So, Steam has to work harder for your business. Once you have an X1, if you want digital then MS has no competition.

Edit: and yes, that's true for the PS4 and Wii U too, but this was a discussion of MS vs. Steam and why many of us like Steam but don't trust MS (which is allegedly hypocrisy).
