The Official "Where the Hell Should I Apply for a Job" Thread

Turning 18 in nine days! Sears has treated me well but quite frankly, with college tuition and the need to save money, it just won't cut it throughout the summer. Sears pays me $6.20/hour and I work 15-20 hours/week. If I stayed there I'd get a raise in June but the MOST it'd be is 20 cents. They will also let me work more in the summer but the MOST would probably be 25 or 26 hours/week. I think it'd be silly of myself to work ANY less than 30 hours/week in the summer, when I have so much free time. I also think that at least $8/hour should be obtainble, 6 dollars and change just isn't enough.

Now, where the heck will offer this to me? There are way too many places in this area that pay minimum wage or at the most 7 bucks an hour. Also so many places aren't even hiring. Citizens Bank, Radio Shack, and Cirtcuit City all told me to apply online and that they'd call if they wanted me. So for now I might as well rule those out and keep trying, as they may not ever call. Staples blatantly told me they're not hiring anyone now. Office Max has no positions for someone my age that start at anything more than $6.25/hour. I'm guessing all stores like Kohl's, Target, etc. will pay less than $7 as well. Something like a waiter might be my only alternative if I want good pay but damn, I really don't want to work at a food place again after having worked at Texas Roadhouse last year for four months.

So, ideas? This is proving harder than I expected.

If you need a job, you will apply anywhere and everywhere, and eventually you will get one.

Well since I already have a job, I'm not applying anywhere and everywhere, only places that a) can give me 30 hours in the summer, and b) pay at least 8 bucks.

How about an internship that means something on your resume?
Internship? I have zero experience.

I would still look into something. A lot of internships expect 0 experience. What are you majoring in? What possible career field?

hey, i get paid $7.20 at sears, lol.

i live in ca tho...

maybe you should do i plan to do in the summer. put im available for sears from 5-closing everyday and for my other job at the mall, put 11-4. i think i'll get around 40-50 hrs that way. you should try the carts at the mall. alot of them pay min wage, but in cash and tax free so it's pretty good. i get paid 6.75 cash + commiission at my cart.

or maybe like johnny rockets. with tips, it's like $10-16 an hr.

Oh, I see. Yeah.

My bad for not reading the OP. 😛

As others have said ... Give the local home Depot a try (if there is one.) If not a Home Depot, check out Menards ... I'm not sure of their pay range, but it's worth looking into.

You may also want to check out Sams Club and/or Costco (A few years ago, I heard Sams was starting people at 9+ per hour, though I don't know if it's that way still)

I think UPS/Fedex would be a good idea to check out too. (around here my little brother applied to UPS to just load/unload trucks and didn't get it ... but they start people off at $9.50)

Costco pays quite a bit as a base salary, well above the avg retail companies.

Just be prepared to lose all your weekends during the summer. I think I only have had one weekend off between May to August.

Find some small business nearby that has an opening, they'll probably pay more.

Make a nice looking sheet with information about yourself and go around to areas with many small offices

Dude, work your ass off during the summer. I work ~50 hrs a week and have 17 credit hours. I wish I would have worked more during the past summer.

I am going to study electrical engineering. I can't possibly picture any company wanting to hire an 18-year-old with no experience who hasn't even gone to college yet.

I definitely don't want to work two jobs, and would like to avoid anything in the food industry, as well.

The nearest Home Depot according to MapQuest is 10.48 miles. I guess that isn't too far is it?

There's also a Costco up there, but I believe they usually hire only seasonal help, so I'd have to accept not having the job anymore when I come home for Christmas break.

As for small businesses, it's far too difficult to find a place that's hiring. I've tried numerous small computer shops and none of them need anyone.

You could always rent a spot on the corner of Walk and Don't Walk from Fatguy. You could probably rake in big bucks selling your young arse to the homos and perverts.

Other than that, I don't think you have many options.

PM me if you want Fatguy's telephone number.

Are people actually serious about the internship recommendation? I don't understand how that's feasible.

Did I make it clear in the first post that I haven't gone to college for even one year yet?

In my old highschool, almost all students had mentorships (just another name for internships). It's not impossible to get one. Easiest way to get one is to network (this applies to jobs too). Contact your friend's parents, your parents friends, school counselor's, etc and let them know you are interested majoring in EE and would like some job experience. You can even volunteer if you like, since the early experience will pay off big in your future jobs.

Costco usually hires you back during Christmas time, cause that's considered seasonal time as well. Actually they will hire you back for as many seasonal terms as you want (providing you don't piss them off).

Definitely will try Costco then, and Home Depot. What about Lowe's?

I can hope to maybe hear something back from Citizens, Radio Shack, or Circuit City, too.

Internship would be great but probably won't happen for me. I don't know enough or the right people and that seems to be the only way to get one.
