Settings/Specs: 7800GTX, 1 GB (other 1 GB is on RMA), 4400+ X2 Processor, 1280x1024, 4x AA.

The graphics are excellent and the game is silky smooth. Doesn't feel like a Quake game though.

Can you see any MP servers? I tried to use the ingame browser and none came up.. I can't tell it it's a firewall issue or not..

Adrenaline Vault has posted a very favorable review of the game. It's currently linked on their home page.

I've been ignoring this game largely, but this review has made it sound much more attractive than some others.

OMG this just made my day! My fav quake 2 DM map is in quake 4 as Over The Edge!!!!! Saaawwwwweeeeeeeeeeeettttttttt! Now, I just need to be able to connect with others....

Played it on a friends computer today. The multiplayer LOOKS like a bastardization between Q2 and Q3 but PLAYS more like UT2004 to me. I'm one of the heretics who likes Q3 and hates Q2 but this really didn't feel like either to me. Didn't get too much into the singleplayer but seemed a lot like doom3 but more fast paced.

Anyone tried to scan their Quake CD/DVD with Kapersky? I just read that KAP AV is detecting a virus on the disc.

Kapersky is known for reporting excessive false positives. It scans clean with everything else.

This is weird, and frustrating.
I can't get a list of servers with the ingame browser, and I cannot connect to Gamespy Arcade.
I uninstalled Sygate, turned off Windows firewall, and connected my computer directly to the cable modem instead of through my router, and it still doesn't work. My other MP games and any other program (thunderbird, trillian) that accesses the internet isn't having any problems.

Edit: I figured it out.. PeerGuardian 2 was blocking access.

I bought fear and quake 4 tonight, total came to $112.xx bought the fear dvd.

I've played about 45 mins of quake 4 single player and about 30 mins of quake 4 multiplayer.

Quake4 multiplayer is nothing but a rebadged unreal tournament multiplayer. I was hoping for something more of the quake 1 multiplayer or possibly quake 2 multiplayer, but am very very very disappointed. I cant stand the multiplayer unreal tournament or quake 3 multiplayer.. its no fun.. its just too fast paced, luck shots..

quake 4 single player is nothing but doom3 on crack--and i hated doom 3. so far, all i've done is run around inside dark and dimly lit corridors on my way to blow up a planetary defense gun.. then the wall explodes and enemies come running out.

blah blah blah.. boring stuff. Its starting out EXACTLY like doom3 which was a dark poorly laid out game.

going to load up fear and see if its any better. I hate dark games. the original quake and quake 2 weren't that dark of a game. quake 1 had the green/brown thing going on, but you could almost always see where you were going. quake 2 was always brightly lit and good to look at.

This current generation of id games is just pure crap.

Okay I just got done playing 3 hours straight single player and 1 hour multi....

IT IS BAD ASS!

The single player is great, I couldnt get enough. But a man has to eat and sleep. It is dark at times.. but not as bad as doom3. The outdoor levels are great. Getting in the walker and the tank is cool as well. Good addition to the game IMO.

I purchased the Special DVD Edition...

Multi is fast and crazy just the way I like it. Some say the multi was lacking but I do not agree. CTF is great as well.

I am playing this on the below specs everything maxed except for AA and that stuff. Will try it with those maxed later.

One thing I want is q2dm1 redone for q4. That would be great.

GO PLAY THE GAME!

EDITED: For the above comments.. play more man... I was disappointed at first because it was dark... but it changes and it changes big time. Just for the first level or two it was dark, but that changes. Wait until u change into a Strogg it gets good. The story line is good as well later on in the game.

I just got back from Bestbuy a bit ago and dropped 186.00 and change. Q4,FEAR,SS2,and B&W2. I have been playing Q4 (out of respect) first and this game is money well spent. I played the Single player for about a 1/4 of the time and MP the rest. the MP is fast paced and smooth running. If I never play the SP it worth the price for the MP alone. ME HAPPY 😉

com_showfps 1

John Carmack of id sofware: "The game tic simulation, including player movement, runs at 60hz, so if it rendered any faster, it would just be rendering identical frames. A fixed tic rate removes issues like Quake 3 had, where some jumps could only be made at certain framerates. In Doom, the same player inputs will produce the same motions, no matter what the framerate is."

there is your fps explanation.

Played a good 30 minutes or so and definitely like the game. Should I enable VSYNC in the game to avoid tearing? Is there a reason I shouldn't do this?

Since (it seems) the game is limited to 60fps anyway like Doom 3, I'd suggest going ahead and turning on Vsync, especially if you have Triple Buffering enabled.

I'm hearing some good comments about Q4's SP in here (and some not so good)...hopefully more people post their impressions as they get and play the game. I'm personally planning on buying the DVD special edition, pending some more positive reviews (here and elsewhere)...I loved Quake 2 years back, and it sounds like this is (probably) worth the money. 🙂

Well, it's about time to turn in for bed, but I wanted to throw in my thoughts.

SP: First of all, this game is NOT Doom3, which is a good thing. The addition of the squad is cool, and moves the game along. That being said, the game play is very linear, and the squad just hangs around while you complete your little side missions and won't join back in until you've completed your task. It's also kinda goofy how they keep shuffling Kane around to different duties, especially because of the predictable nature of the assignments, which are usually based on the previous 5 seconds of conversation. All that aside, the game is fun so far, and that's what counts.

MP: This is Quake3 with a facelift. The action is really fast just like Quake3, but it looks about like Doom3. I don't recognize all of the weapons when blazing full speed yet since they look different, but I should get them down soon enough. If you like the fast MP player type games with easy to use weapons, you'll be happy. If you are more of an original UT kinda gamer and enjoy more complex weaponry, this probably won't be your thing.

Good reviews guys 🙂

Sadly, here in Canada, somehow the release date for Q4 was pushed back till Thurs., so i have to wait another couple days 🙁

I cannot wait to play Q4 multiplayer.

Honestly, for DM, i think i am going to prefer it to UT2k4 DM, & I absolutely love UT2k4.

Thanks for your input too

Regarding the singleplayer, that sounds pretty decent to me. The "assignments" and squad thing almost reminds me of Unreal II, which I actually liked despite it having nothing to do with the original and that it seemed that it wasn't very popular. If it's anything like Q2's single player at all, I'd be happy I think.

Multiplayer - also sounds good to me. I liked Quake 3's MP a lot back in the day (though Q2 was actually the game that got me hooked on online play). I'm glad to hear that it sounds like several (most?) of the Q2 weapons are making a comeback too, since I thought those fit the game really well and enjoyed using them. I suppose I am definitely an "original UT kinda gamer" as you put it, but I can definitely appreciate the Quake-style of gameplay as well.

Overall looking forward to the game and will probably pick it up within the next several days. 🙂 (Not to mention that if it has even half the mod community that Quake 2 did, it'll be well worth the money.)

picked up my preorder from gamestop today.

q4 multiplayer =
single player= meh who cares? havent tried it yet.. im sure its fine.

bought it for the classic quake multiplayer, and it delivers there.
really cool i have a halfway decent single player campaign to play though like Q2
