Yeah this is my first launch console since I got my PS1 Sept 9th, 1995.

Still have my working SCPH-1001 with the August 1995 sticker on it that I waited for that morning after ditching school my sophomore year. No lines or anything just walked up and picked up my preorder at like 9 am, store was pretty empty.

Ah the benefits of being a straight A student. :D

I don't even know what I want on it, I just had to fork over my money on principle to show support for Sony's (revised?) stance on consumer content ownership for PS4.

If they bring final fantasy back to the days before FF X, and remove the BS emo characters that one one gives a fuck about, then I might consider playing a new one.

I know right? Can't Square make a damn RPG without emo kids/futuristic settings?

How about an RPG going back to the from the days of FF1-FF8? Even FFX was great and had a fantastic world.

Nowadays, I can't even distinguish which new Final Fantasy is which because they all look the same.

Emo too bad ass for myself look how cool I am blah blah blah mainstream Hollywood shit yeah...

They need to take a page from Ni no Kuni and go back to Final Fantasy 4: just simple innocent heartfelt story telling and tragedy and no Hollywood glam bullshit with pantene hair characters that can jump a mile into the air and fly unassisted and teleport strafe mid air while carrying a 3000 lb sword that also happens to be a gun, a laser, and a nuclear bomb and a helicopter and a plasma cannon.

Final Fantasy 4 was/is still the defacto JRPG standard. No convoluted battle systems or grinding or fancy this or that tech trees or bullshit distracting mini games no emo whining characters, no nonsense. Just straight up story telling crammed full of tragedy, regret, trust, redemption, love, betrayal, revenge, sacrifice, and just old fashioned good versus evil and the most unforgettable characters and events of any RPG.

Palom and Porom always get me no matter how many times I play no matter what platform. Ah while on the topic of Palom and Porom:

porom_palom_by_heavengreen-d4jkaf8.jpg

Then there was Xenogears... a revelation entirely of it's own.

FF9 was my favorite. I wish they'd make something like that again.

Sony just needs to be sure to have stout developer support.

If Square can redeem themselves and learn from their failure as a company this generation... there is hope...

Come on Square... don't fuck it up.

Square leaving Nintendo for Sony back in the day is probably what single handedly secured Sony as a major player in the game industry.

Yep.. I've been a Microsoft "fanboy" for as long as they've been in the game. Really that just means I preferred Xbox (for its launch games) and Xbox 360 (because PS4 was way overpriced).

Microsoft really screwed this up. Really, really bad. I can't imagine buying an Xbox One over a PS4 at this point.

PSN rumored to cost $50/year, cheaper than XBoxLive at $60/year

Rumored? PS+ is $50 a year. It goes on sale sometimes for $40. Sony themselves do promos sometimes with it, the last one that was like 2 months ago was buy a year of PS+ and get 15 months for the price instead, and it was running during a PSN promo where for every $49.99 you spent you received $10 in PSN credit on your account. So it ended up being $40 for 15 months of PS+

Does PS+ have dedicated servers? If so, I think that's a fair price in my opinion. Servers costs money and people to maintain.

FFX was amazing. I used to play violin and even learned to play a lot of the songs. Definitely a WORK of art of a game. I don't think Any of the recent final fantasy games have did as well as FFX. That's why they're remaking it. I wish they'd remake FF7 though.

I just wish they'd make a retro FF and not another emo futuristic one.

We don't know if they will. Multiplayer was/is free on the PSN currently. PS+ is sub model where you get a few extra features (like beta access, automatic updating) and lots of free games, like each week there is a free game it seems like now. The game is either PS3, PSN, or Vita titles, but they have an instant game collection where you sign up and are given a dozen games right away. Only catch is you only can access the games for as long as you are sub to PS+. Oh yeah PS+ gets larger discounts on items on sale as well and those you keep regardless of sub.

Well I just mean it's not 100% for sure, because we're so far from launch that anything can happen. But right now I'm hearing 50/60 for PS4/XBO.

Personally I think they need to lay off the retro rehashes too before they over do those and drive them into the ground as well.

Don't remake 4, 5, or 6 for the 15th time. If you want to remake something, remake Xenogears.

Make a game with everything that those games represented, using their current engine.

Free roaming world map, treasure hunting, item hoarding, and most importantly.

Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters, Story and characters.

Nobody really cares about "zomg did you see that 9384757308 hit combo I did?"... well yeah that IS fun (and they blatantly stole FF XIII's combat elements from Xenosaga II) but it's not the focal point of the game. It's optional polish.

They really need to stop with the billy bad ass super-human characters.

Been playing Final Fantasy Origins FFI and I've forgotten how long it's been since I enjoyed arriving to a new town and heading straight for the weapons shops.

Keep it simple, STOP trying to innovate it and STOP trying to appeal to the masses. The masses did not make you what you are now Square. What are the masses getting you now huh? Multi million dollar budgets that fail to break even, an alienated fan base, fired CEOs, and bankruptcy. You killed your own fan base, your guaranteed cash cow, for the promise of a couple more dollars, you damn sellouts.

Slit your moms throat for a nickel you did.

Ya we're too far away. The DRM thing was GREAT for PS4 until I really thought about it.
Like someone said in another thread, we already HAVE DRM for Xbox360 and Ps3. You've had to type in those stupid codes for EA games to be able to play online. You think that PS4 is going to force EA to not do that on their console? EA can simply just say "Good night sweet princess for your sports franchise!" That'd be a massive loss right there in sales on the PS4.

After thinking about that, I realize that the No DRM thing is just what it is,a dream. Whether we like it or not, we'll be typing in a code to play online for BF3, or to get roster updates on any sports game from EA.

To me at the moment, and this is just speculation, MS was just completely honest and got it out of the way ASAP. Take the bad PR 5 months from the console release. Sony is deciding to let people figure out 3-4 months later that EA, and other people will still implement the same DRM they always have.

With so much left unanswered for the Xbox, and so much left unknown about PS4 exclusive titles, I'm really undecided. My new PC parts just came in the mail though so I got some gaming to catch up on.

I've never owned a Sony console, but I do currently own a 360 and a bunch of games. However, I cant see myself buying a Xbone.

The only thing that could change that is if the used game/DRM picture is not quite as rosy as Sony suggests. But still, no evidence to suggest so, so I will wait and see. I wont buy the console on launch day - for one thing, living in South Africa makes that impossible.

It really makes me wonder what MS will do. They are totally boned, and hopefully they know it. Either:

1) Typical corporate egos will make them unable to realize they are now the last horse in the race, by a long way. They will launch, fail, and dont understand why.
2) They realize they are in trouble, and counter by trying to add more value to the launch bundle. Perhaps a free extra controller, a free game, and a year of XBL.

They might drop the price, but I see that as unlikely. I dont think they will do anything about the DRM requirement.

Dont you guys find it interesting that MS has such hectic and anti used games policies, while Sony does not? I mean, both Sony and MS are publishers themselves, and are also subject to pressure from publishers. How and why did Sony not do what MS is doing?

If EA wants to sell keys for $5-10 for their shitty sports and vs mode shooter games, so be it.

As long as my discs won't be bricked forever and retain their offline or single player features, I'm willing to work with developers getting their fair cut for good games.

Ni No Kuni I have both a Wizard Edition and a normal copy, and also sold them a dozen other copies by word of mouth, recommendations, hyping it to friends and family, and as gifts, etc. The Last of Us will probably be the same, I already have both limited editions ordered.

But as a collector who enjoys buying and KEEPING niche games like RPGs, I won't contribute to anything remotely close to bricking my physical copies. They need to last forever and work any time I want without any bullshit.

Best way to do it is base content on the disc and charge a modest $5-10 for DD DLC content. In reality you're just buying a key but at least dress it up with some real tangible value like content, online play, etc and not just brick discs or eliminate physical copies.

Hell even my coveted RPGs, who wouldn't pay $5 for double experience or something enticing like that as a clever cover up for a "license key" for a used copy of a game? People are more than willing to dish out real money on virtual loot as it is. But 10 years from now when the game is used, the servers/publisher is no longer, etc, the game is still playable just not double experience or whatever. Little things like that don't affect the game (because once you are max level, any exp bonuses are negated, so it doesn't affect the game at all if you don't have it).

Put some value into it. Don't just be a dick about it and turn peoples beautiful art covered $60 discs into $0 coasters, esp for people who want to find games they missed on launch and can no longer find a physical copy and have no choice but to track down a used one.

Getting a cut of used games needs to be about adding value to first time users of the disc through genuine beneficial bonus content, and not base features ripped from a crippled base game and resold.

There are enough gamers willing to support devs for games they love, more than enough to cancel out freeloaders, if you stop being dicks about it.

Tidus was hands down the worst part about FFX. I'm not just talking about that awful Gilbert Gottfried laugh, but he's the exact thing that you complain about: a whiny, emo, bitchy teenager.

You know what the games need? A damn good soundtrack! In my opinion, if the battle themes suck, I might as well not even play the game. You spend around 25-30% of the time in battles, so the BGM better be good enough to enjoy it. It's not uncommon for me to just listen to RPG OSTs; according to iTunes, one of the Blue Dragon songs has 753 plays! :p

I had been leaning towards the PS4 since all this MS rumor mongering started months ago. Now it's pretty much a done deal. Sorry MS. You fucked up.

I say this as a big Xbox/MS fan; ~40 360 games to roughly 10 PS3 games. But the $100 price difference is nothing to sneeze at, plus MS's laughable DRM and policy missteps.

*sigh* And I was looking forward to Forza 5. Oh well. Not for $500, I'm not.

:D:sneaky::(:'(

If this game doesn't at least get best game soundtrack of 2013 then people just suck and I'm done with them.

This part always gets me simultaneously teary eyed and smiling:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL57FE6F7DA0E09083&feature=player_detailpage&v=CrvcRriFTkI#t=58s

It was mostly overlaid during sad scenes, but then most of the sad scenes I was happy that it was sad because the whole game was JRPG salvation for me, so it was like... sad... but happy and buzzed at the same time *because* it was just so good and tragic of the likes I have been longing for for so long! Talk about emotional clusterfuck.
