Discovery store has cheap Paper Lanterns...christmas lights with paper lanterns over em...they look really cool.

Plus, check out Pier 1-- 15% off w/ a student ID.

I know most schools have poster sales. Pick up some cheap posters. My favorite are reprints of old French and Italian liquor ads.

Get a plant (warning...may become a urinal).

Go to staples, buy box of thumb tacks.

At night, back at dorm, go on a panty raid.

There you have it: cheap and effective decorations for your wall.

Get drunk then goto the nearest salvation army store, or goodwill, lots of cool stuff cheap. Maybe even better, look at a few yard sales on a weekend. ALcohol references are always great ideas, but anything will do.

I suggest you just go through w/ your dorm room as it is now, heat. Just worry about decorating a little bit here and there one the school year starts. Trust me, you will find posters everywhere. Different things from people you'd meet who wouldn't need them anymore, and you'd just get hand-me-downs - that's what my friends did their first year, and they had a blast.

You might want to get something distinguishible though, like a nice lamp, but that's about as far as I can go - if your roommate is like any other roomie out there, chances are he will have enough posters for the both of ya ;)

-- Blue liquid laundry detergent can be used to paint designs (stars on the ceiling, whatever) that glow under black lights -- much cheaper than glow-in-the-dark paint. Easy to clean up later too :)

-- Mix water-based tempera (a few dollars a bottle or cheaper) with a little bit of liquid soap, mix slowly (so it doesn't get all sudsy and bubbly), and you can paint your windows. The soap helps the paint stick to the glass and makes cleanup easy.

-- I like to leave at least a wall or so free to decorate throughout the year with programs, ticket stubs, cards, etc.; good ads from magazines and flyers are fair game too. At the end of the year, packing it all up in a folder or envelope makes an easy way to keep mementos if you're into that sort of thing.

-- Color printer + digital art. Use your own or get your money's worth out of computing fees by going down to the computer center and using the large format or color laser printers there ;)

-- Most poster stores will have a rack or two of cheapie/sale posters for just a few bucks a piece. The time spent looking can often result in some great finds.

-- The classic empty drink bottles. Even in a "dry" dorm, nobody can say anything if your collection of Absolut or wine bottles is empty ;)

-- Hit a dollar store or two...self-explanatory :)

-- This only works later in the year...but can be useful for following years: calendars go on MAJOR sales (50-75% off...free if you know people who work in bookstores) in January. Pick up one for regular use...and pick up a few with good pictures.

-- Invest in GOOD sticky stuff to keep your stuff on the walls...nothing more frustrating than having your posters peel off and fall on you when you sleep :p

Empty bottles: Fill with water and the inside of a highlighter (the felt part with the ink) and put a blacklight behind it. Now the bottle glows in the dark, it's badass....

Most colleges have free promotional posters of all the sports teams with corporate logos and a schedule on them, not too hard to find

2 important things: a)electrical strips w/ fuses and b)toothpaste

a) trust your computer to the campus grid? bwa-ha-ha-ha

b) it glows in the dark and can be used instead of spackling when filling in all those illegal nail holes

Drink lots of beer bottles and tape/glue the caps all over the place. Last semester my lil' brother had the ceiling half full.

If you live in dorms like I used to live in, you certainly don't want to put too much money into decorating them. :)

I suggest using the inevitable empty beer cases to "wallpaper" your wall, and use the bottles as matching vases. Once you get enough caps you can make a very spiffy welcome mat, which can be flipped over to remove mud/snow from your boots come winter.
No need to buy extra things to decorate with, use what you have! :) Anything nice will just get stolen/broken anyways.

Yea my ceiling last year was almost like styrofoam, so beer caps easily stuck in the ceiling. Had about 10 sq feet covered easily.
