Thanks cableguy! I'll post when I get invites, which makes me wonder how long gmail will keep this invite system and when they will just open it up to everyone.

First 3 people to give technical support to someone asking for help in the software, technical support, etc. forums (and get a followup response that the problem was solved) can PM me a link to the post, their name, and email address, and I will send a GMAIL invite your way. Even if you don't post your gmail invites on here, I want to make sure you give back to the AT community.

I dont care how long you have been registered or your post count, just help fellow AT members.

I am curious exactly what it is that google can do with your emails.

Can they show the content of your emails to third parties?

can they sell your email address to spammers?( i assume this is a definite yes to pay for all thoss GB's)


what other privacy issues are involved?

Per Google's privacy policy:

"Google will never sell, rent or share your personal information, including your Gmail address or email content, with any third parties for marketing purposes without your express permission."


Also of note from the PP:

"You should know:

We collect limited account information and store and maintain your account and email messages on our secure servers.

We will never rent, sell or share information that personally identifies you for marketing purposes without your express permission.

We serve highly relevant ads and other information as part of the service using our unique content-targeting technology. No human reads your email to target ads or related information to you without your consent.

You can update your account information and preferences at any time."

Basically, I don't care if they sell this emails to spammers to pay off this GB's but as long they have a good spam filter and we can choose to block any mails we want, I don't really care since it's 1GB, I could always make my filter wih some specific words that could be spam and label it as POSSIBLY SPAM and delete everything......

The ACLU is insane. I mean, yes, I really approve of them most of the time, but the privacy fuss that has come up over google/gmail just boggles the mind. The only thing they are doing differently than any other email provider is using the email scans (which all providers do -- whether for spam filtering, antivirus, or advertising).

Honestly, google is giving us the best free email service I've personally ever used (at least since Hotmail stopped POP access; back in the day it was pretty sweet). Complaining over unobtrusive ads, delivered by a computer, that are actually relevant to my interests most of the time... it makes me want to go slap someone over there.

And the legislation that was (is?) being bandied about... don't even get me started.

ok cuz i read an article that made it sound like google would allow third parties to personally search through the content of any emails you had on there system and that really turned me off for a second.
