I have a certain level of patience, but the thing is I have every other part for my new PC, save for the CPU + mobo. I ordered them all over the past couple of weeks, thinking for sure the Conroes would become availible soon. Not only is it incredibly difficult to look at the parts laying there, completely useless and yearing for me to piece them together, but as each day passes, I'm afraid I'll have a harder time making returns should something fail to work.

I hate paper launches...

This is EXACTLY the way I feel and I got in late on the game. I've only had my stuff for 5 days and it's bugging the hell out of me just watching it sit there. This is going to be my first build and the anticipation is freakin' killing me.

Does anyone think it would be a good idea to get a 805D and the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA just to tide me over until the nForce 500's come out along with the E6600's?
No. Isn't 805 still around $110 at least? Might as well get an E6300 from ZZF for $219 then you at least get to play with Conroe and if you're not satisfied with it you'll sell it for better value. Once you have an E6300 or an E6400, you might even feel more relaxed and would be less prone to jump in a bad deal on E6600/E6700. :D

Well I saw the 805D OEM for $86 on NewEgg. However, I do like the idea of just getting an E6300 and then selling it later.

I really don't care what Conroe I have as long as I get one but my problem lies in the fact that I just bought the A-DATA Vitesta DDR2-533 2x1Gb kit of RAM and I don't think that I will be able to overclock the CPU nearly as fast as if I had some decent RAM.

What do you think I should do? I don't even care how fast my CPU is as long as I can play all the newest games on my Viewsonic VX2025 monitor with low framerates.

Thanks so far!

There was some funny guy who said the whole situation was Intel's "strategy" to check price-gauging. Too funny. Indeed I'd strongly suggest anyone, who's been readying to build a Conroe-rig, should not waste time and just buy one within your original budget + $50~70. Anand warned about price gauging in his Conroe previews/reviews several times and he doesn't say things lightly. If what Mr. Otellini said is true (i.e. 1M chip in first 7 weeks - which is like 5% of their production), the gauging won't get any better.

Besides, sure you might get one $50 cheaper maybe 2 weeks later but is it really worth it. Looking up the price/inventory charts and forums every 30 mins? I'd rather skip a few lunches, which would help you with compulsive eating due to the stress, and save time. Just pick up when you see anything semi-decent or the least expensive, and forget about the money you paid. I mean, if it's a rig you'd keep for the coming year(s), it's really not a big deal.

I broke down and bought a E6400 before they are out of stock. If the overpriced E6700's are gone, the lower models are probably next. I'd rather finish my system this week and then upgrade down the road. Atleast I can OC these things to beastly levels.

Newegg's E6300 has gone down to $359...still more than I'd be willing to pay for the E6600. Nice to know that when they "mistakenly" charge $206 over the MSRP on a product they will "correct" things within a handful of hours by reducing the price by $30.

And it's still dumb considering ZZF has them in stock for 219 shipped. And retail.

Yup, people are really under-estimating the power of the 6300 for the money....

I totally agree. Especially after even a mild OC.

For the e6400 fans: TigerDirect now has the Retail version In Stock on their website for 269.99 + shipping (and tax if you're in NC, IL, or FL) 281.98 shipped to DC, but I think I'll wait for 1) the e6600 and 2) prices to settle a little more

I'm not aware of Newegg misrepresenting inventory.

In fact, they're the only I'd ever order these parts from, because "IN STOCK" means exactly that. There's no beating around the bush backorder bull**** to deal with, like so many of the other vendors.

Look how many have taken lots of orders and already admitted they had no stock or nowhere close to what they had represented.

I never get that with ZZF, and I do business with them a lot.

Alright, I'm debating getting an E6400 or E6300. Which one do you think is the better option?

Nice info. Thanks.

Edit: It is OEM, not retail. I think ZZF at 219 retail is the better deal.

I think the E6400 is the better OC'er, IIRC. There is an article on AT regarding this...

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2802

The E6300 and E6400 can easily overclock to E6700 and Core 2 Extreme X6800 levels, though the smaller cache does limit performance a bit. That being said, our overclocked E6300 was able to equal and in all cases but one outperform AMD's Athlon 64 FX-62. In fact, in quite a few benchmarks, the overclocked E6300 is essentially out of reach of anything AMD can offer with their current K8 designs. At $183, the value here is tremendous, and if you're willing to overclock the benefits don't get any clearer than that.

Faster is almost always better. It really depends on:
1) Are you going to overclock?
2) Are you going to overclock to the maximum?

What's the difference? If you'd be happy with an e6400 OC'ed to 2.8Ghz, and there was a more than reasonable chance that you could get an e6300 to OC to 2.8Ghz (with the same MB, memory and cooling as you were already planning to use) - then you'd be wasting your money paying extra for the e6400.

On the other hand, if you had to change to a different MB or faster memory in order to get the same results, then the e6400 with the slower accessories makes more sense.
If you don't plan on OC'ing and you want a faster processor and you have the money - get the e6400.

Make sense?

well, supposedly if things came in on the 7th, I don't see why the 10th is such a far off date. I mean, at least I can pre-order and hopefully get lucky on the 10th rather than to play this waiting game each freaking day refreshing pages.

I wonder why ZZF is taking so long on releasing the conroes?
I ordered a Mobo and Mouse on Sunday hoping it'd be shipped out today but it's still processing (perhaps a day off?!)

Dude, like...read the post three lines up...

Didn't catch the line on them not having been in stock yet ;). Easy dude, easy... it's not a crime to have skimmed past something.

I'm sure they're not delaying intentionally, especially since with their posted prices they would completely undercut newegg. I read a post from a guy a while back here that said that the first major batch of retail chips was small enought that it was only being divided among a few of the big boys (newegg, tigerdirect, and pcmall are the names I remember). ZZF might not make that list.

I'm hoping they get some soon though--they seem much less inclined to gouge.
