Yep, I'd wager most anyone contemplating building a conroe based system on the day of the release probably has their own source of income. I have a job too, but it's a cushy job and I don't have to show up until noon (well technically, I don't have to show up at all, though I always try to get there by noon because it helps keep my sleeping pattern sane...if I don't give myself something during the day to be up for, my sleeping pattern fully inverts itself in less than the space of a week, and then I'm nocturnal).

@Nightmare225, For newegg, since it's a California company, the first time around everything believed it would be PST so actually 4 hours.

I wouldn't base the release date on EST time, remember it's only LEGAL to sell on 8/7 and that is relative to their time (PST mostly)

Edit: Xestanz beat me too it...

Enterprise-level software engineering, at a "distributed" company. Basically people can work from anywhere where they can get Internet access, since everything just gets checked into SVN servers anyways.

P.S. Only one hour

On the east coast, yes, but my suspicion is that newegg operates on west-coast time, since that is where their HQ is. So 1+3 hours.

Well, in 6 mintues we get to see if NewEgg or ZZF really really love us. Odds are they will post at midnight PST but we'll find out soon.

So where is the line between being a very small scale DOS attack and really wanting to buy a product? I would say auto-refreshing every 15 seconds.

Haha, ya, around 12EST (8 here) I had it on 5 secs, but I figure I'll just set it 30mins before 12.

@Pixle, not that I know of, but there is a plug-in for Firefox earlier in this thread.

I don't know. If I were their sys admin, and every geek in America was auto-refreshing my/their site every 15 seconds, I'm pretty sure I'd just take down the page for a few hours. If they don't have very good servers or very good bandwidth, it would still feel like a DOS attack. <--"How many hits last night?"

Moreover, I don't think they can schedule listings - what's the point. They probably add them manually anyway.

I'm sure they can. It wouldn't be hard at all to script something where it has a "Don't display until this date", and as big as newegg is (the database).
But then again, they could not add products till the morning or anything.

Yes, I have sneaking suspicion that NewEgg and ZZF won?t update at midnight simply because no one will be at work. They may well wait until morning simply to make their lives easier and avoid paying overtime. We will see.

I would very highly doubt that the update process is a manual one...their database is too large and too complex for that to be even remotely practical. I'd say that they must have a way of scheduling things, though that doesn't necessarily mean that there are any Core 2 Duo updates scheduled.

I don't see a relation between "can'd do manually" and "have to schedule because of that".
If they schedule showing an item, it means they already added this item, right? :)

Regarding addition of a new item to the DB: it's manual. I am sure for 99%. Do you see a lot of repeating sentences in all the IT stores? I don't. There is always something unique. There is always a different information in the details (more/less/mistakes/typos/etc). Always different photos (except the manufacturer-provided ones).

Regarding schedules: in order to implement something like this, there should be a separate filed for each item record in the database - after what datetime to show the item. This needed very rarely, so I don't think it is a good idea to have this field, and have one more DBfield/date check every single time the item shows on the web page.

And the last thing - they do not ship during midnight. So why bother with scheduler? Just to please several maniacs from AnandTech forum? :) I never saw this before, and I am pretty sure it will not happen today.

Though... I'd like to see something like this to happen :)
