Very possibly. All hardware will die eventually, thoughAs in, are the others from that batch going to go sour on their owners too, but just take longer to do it?
I'm not voting since mine has a specific issue which made it "DOA" but I managed to realize the issue and it works, but not as advertised.
I got the BLOD as many people did and thanks to my PC history (and PS3) I jumped into Safe Mode, and rebuilt the Database. This got it to boot ONCE without issue. I got into the OS and installed the 1.5 update. System Reboots, back to BLOD.
So I go back into Safe Mode and do rebuilt Database. System reboots, and now it's installing 1.5 Update. System reboots to BLOD.
So I assumed I have to rebuild the Database every single time? Nope, Safe Mode click "Restart PS4" and it boots up fine. Try this every time, no issues.
TL;DR:
I have to go into Safe Mode and select "Restart PS4" to get it to boot normally, otherwise it gets BLOD. But it works, have played 10+ hours.
So if you put it into standby and start it from there it will still not work correctly? I'm wondering if it has this issue when it starts up from standby and the powered off state.
Remember, most stuff is anecdotal. People who are pissed are most vocal.
My theory is that because the thing is so small, and they (and MS) are not using solid-state hard drives, that the hard drive inside could be damaged by someone handling it really poorly in shipping/etc.
They shouldn't be nearly as fragile. Hard drives are fragile while spinning because with enough force, the arm can hit the platter and cause damage. However, if the drive is off or has been parked (through OS or drive firmware), the arm isn't even over the platter. However, it's still a mechanical device.
Not sure about the Slave Labor sabotage but the problems do seem to be isolated to Amazon.
Yea mine was packaged pretty much the same, PS4 on the bottom with no protection and air packaging on top. Not a great way to package anything.
That is the important part isn't it. I mean in theory they should be able to ship completely in the PS4 box, boxing it again is probably to keep people from identifying it in transit for the most part.Same here. PS4 on the bottom of the box and all the air packets on top. Luckily the PS4 itself seems pretty well packed in its own box.
Amazon put the console box and then three games on top of it. The air packing was just over that and didn't do much.
Except for in the PSN Store. It's kind of jerky.
Oh, and my PS4 is fine too.![]()
fvxk.
ok, got it all set up. played BF4 for 30 minutes. then went to close application and damn system froze up on me. light on ds4 went orange. system unresponsive. had to pull the power cord and plug it back in. went to system recovery mode and ok now. not feeling good about it. its the same feeling i got right before my ps3 got the ylod.
not officially doa though. will power back on in an hour.
I was surprised when I saw the air cushioning on the bottom. I bought 7 3TB Red drives from Amazon, and the put them in an extremely oversized box with just cushioning on top, so the drives were sliding around. 3 of them wouldnt turn on, so I returned the whole batch.
I'm almost at the point with Amazon were I dont want to buy tech items from them anymore. Especially since they charge tax in CA. I complained a lot about the packaging for the drives, and even put it in a review and uploaded pics. Of course they rejected it, but ever since then they send me messages to rate their packaging after I receive an order. Maybe my account is flagged to package it correctly.![]()
I do as well, it is just a damn shame. I had a large doll house shipped via UPS once. I don't advise it. Wasn't pretty.I got a UPS from amazon that was completely smashed. Luckily, the batteries weren't cracked. They put the UPS in a huge box with a few air cushions and it slammed around inside. Cracked the housing and cut wires. They shipped me a new one, but I hate to see good product ruined due to idiotic packaging.
Unacceptable. Similarly the BLOD talk above and safe mode and what not none of it is good.
If software updates don't resolve I would just keep it 11 months then get t sorted under warranty.
UPS is pretty notorious for being a bull in a china shop with their packages. Guy I know who owns a hobby shop dropped them after they destroyed too many of his shipments.
A lot of stores do use boxes that are WAY too big for the item, and then skimp on the packing material. My PS4 came from NCIX in a gigantic box with just the air pouches on one side. Fortunately it wasn't thrown around too much.
The rumour de jour for the DOA consoles is sabotage by interns working at Foxconn. I suppose these were those folks that weren't getting paid that we heard about not too long ago. They're such a despicable company but nobody wants to pay double the price for their gadgets, so we tolerate it. Myself included. Workers paradise.
Makes for an fun conspiracy, though, even if it there is no truth to itIt's a bogus rumor. The interns do not even make up 1/10 the workforce at the facilities that work on the PS4 among other hardware. They also manufacture PC motherboards, ipods, iphones, various smartphones, various tablets for asus and the like, as well as a variety of components for the XBox. To blame interns on this is just ridiculous when they probably have 3,000 other cooks in the kitchen so to speak.
