The Office ... U.S. or British version?

So I'm a litle late to the party, but I have been watching the US version then recently netflixed season 1 and love it. Laugh out loud funny.

Then I thought I would netflix the British version and man I'm dying with laughter! I would say I lean toward the British version as "funnier" but both are great.

I love genius satire!

After watching the American version first, I did the same.

After popping in the Brittish Season 1 disc, I realized that it was EXACTLY THE SAME. Every episode was copied VERBATIM from the Brittish show. First, this goes to show you how incredibly lame and uninventive the American TV people are - at least with comedy and reality TV - considering every single show we have here was ripped from someone else in the UK. And then every single horror movie coming out now was ripped from the Japanese. So I just have to say that American's are fvcking retarded and completely uncreative when it comes to the aforementioned genre's. And whenever we copy something like that, horror from the japanese or comedy from the brittish, we usually do a poor job.

Back on topic, I couldn't watch the Brittish version because I just felt like I was watching the same exact freakin thing just with different actors and an occasional word changed here or there. But I wish that I had watched the Brittish one instead, since it is clearly superior in all forms (as its brittish humor and of course the brittish do brittish humor better) except for the guy who plays Dwight Shrewt, I think that guy is much more funny then his Brittish counterpart.

Both the British version and the American version were created by the same guy, that's why they are the same.

I guess im glad i didnt see the british version first. The american episodes make me laugh so hard that soil myself. I really love that show.

There are only a few (less than 5) episodes that were more or less exactly the same.

The first season, I'd say the british one was noticeably better. But, the american version is much, much better than the british one once you get into season 2 and beyond. It's really not even close for me. They have done a much better job with all the secondary characters in the american version.

I love the US version. I could watch that show over and over. Saw the British version and wouldn't really go back to it.

I love the brit version. That one where that big guy was dressed up as ali g for the costume day...

C'mon do it.
No.
C'mon.
No.
Aw, just do it.
... Booakasha

😀

Tough to compare. When the US version tried to be more realistic like the British version in its early episodes, I thought it sucked. Then season 2 of the US version was hilarious, but any sense of realism was gone and it was more like an American sitcom with wildy outlandish scenarios.

I'd probably give the nod to the US version because of its latest episodes.

Disclaimer: I watched the British version way back in 2003 when Amazon first got them, so it's been awhile.

We need a poll! 🙂

I prefer the american version, mostly because of the actors. They cast the roles very well.

I think they're both quite good, and the American show has gotten a lot better since they stepped out of the shadow of the original and started making it more, well, American. That being said, I think the English show is much more emotionally authentic, and some of its cringe-inducing moments are far beyond anything on the US show. Episode 4 of the first season of the UK show is one of my favorite episodes of any show, ever.

I LOVE the NBC version (well, it's the only version I've seen).

But there's one moment that sticks out in my mind the most and it's from season two. It's the episode (I think the one where Dwight finds out Oscar's "Secret) and Angela and Dwight are in a store room talking in code about having a late night sex romp. Angela mentions something like "there will be NO cooking tonight." And Dwight says "What if I'm hungry?" Angela replies, "NO COOKING." The whole time, Ryan is standing there looking quite confused.

**Queue next shot**

Ryan sitting down staring at the camera like he just walked in on his dad doing his mom doggystyle 😀

Both are very good. I was surprised by the US version, I expected it to be a badly done copy of the real thing. It turned out to be pretty good. I still have to give the nod to the UK version though. David Brent makes me uncomfortable just watching it. Michael Scott is too decent. He can be a complete ass, but there are times when you feel sorry for him. That never happened with Brent. He was always despicable.

I don't know, man. In the episode near the end of season 2 (might even be the last one) where he's begging to not be made redundant, I felt really, really sad. Sometimes he can be a selfish, petty little man, but other times, I think the world needs more people like David Brent.

I think they only copied the first few episodes from the British version, or at least that's what I heard.

Regarding Americans sucking at comedy... I beg to differ. We do some great stuff, and we do some crappy stuff. Watch Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, I think it has great potential (Netflix has the pilot episode)

The irony in AMDZen's post is that Ricky Gervais says his biggest influence for The Office was Spinal Tap, made by Americans, and his favorite sitcoms are Seinfeld and the Simpsons, neither of which has any British influence whatsoever.

Having watched both of them, I prefer the American version. However, the Brits get the nod for allowing far more outlandish stuff on the air, things that would never fly on NBC.
