Are YOU the jerk? A sign: You are quick to point out others' mistakes
Another sign: You secretly enjoy watching other people suffer and squirm
Author: Companies should treat jerks as incompetent employees

Unfortunately, many workplaces today ignore, forgive or even encourage nastiness.

I dunno about THAT... They should simply be treated like jerks.

That's just part of the job of being an office monkey, the low classification of the job ensures you're going to be around other incompetent douchebags.

How to differentiate one of these people from someone who simply annoys you: (One indication: After talking to the alleged offender, one feels oppressed, humiliated, de-energized, or belittled.);
hmm... that sounds like an extreme type of office asshole. we have some incredibly annoying people here but no one that falls into the extreme category, at least not in my book anyway.

my friend and I enjoy laughing at the fat guy but that's mostly behind his back. :evil:

That describes someone I work with perfectly. I have bucket loads of humility, so I put up with it. I've put up with it so much that their reaction to whatever I ask or do doesn't even phase me anymore.

Ditto at my last couple of workplaces. But then, I'm not afraid to call someone out for being a dick, and neither were any of my co-workers (save for maybe a couple)

Typically those types stand down if you stand up to them... especially if you call them out in front of others.

We don't really have any bullies at work.. we got the clowns, quiets ones, yappy ones, etc, but no bullies. What is this high school? How can you even be bullied at work anyways? You're an adult.

We had a guy like this a while back. . .god what a condescending prick he was when he knew he was right about something and somebody else either didn't understand it as fully as he did or was just plain wrong. . .but the problem was, he was pretty much always right. You couldn't call him out or shoot him down because he knew his shit, and he knew what he was talking about, and he would just make you look even MORE stupid if you tried to call him out. Most people just avoided him. I guess I'm a jerk because I secretly liked watching him grind people's arguments into pulp. That guy OWNED. I'm sorry he left.

We've got a guy like that ... and people dismiss it by saying "Oh, that's just Hank being Hank" ... such bullshit. I go into a quiet rage every time I hear that statement uttered. The problem is that he is all bluster because his skills have diminished over time, and he has no interest in learning something new, so he immediately goes offensive all the time.

The way I see it, these people should be looked at as indirectly reducing the companies potential to make more money. The characteristics of these people can often damage the productivity of those around them since productivity and quality is very much a mind of over matter influence. You cannot produce numbers here, but with enough experience dealing with and observing people it should be obvious unless you purposely ignore the problem or are not exposed to it.

Most office Jerks/Bullies behave that way to cover up their own mistakes, poor performance, or misconduct. The best way to deal with them is to be smarter than they are. be observant of everything they do take notes and when the time is right (believe me you will know when that time is) you will have the ammo at hand to sink their battleship. I know from personal experience. I had a manager once who was constantly riding me and telling his bosses that I was stealing but he couldn't prove it yet. Well he was doing this to redirect their attention from him concerning thefts they knew were happening but couldn't figure out who was doing it. I just took his crap, covered my butt and checked out everything he was doing until I figured out how he was doing it and could prove it. The look on his face when I made the accusation in a meeting was like (don't mess with me punk). The look on his face at the end of the meeting was like a deer in the headlights after I proved it and his boss told him to pack his stuff and get a lawyer. The smile on my face was well, It's still there! after 22 years. :D
