What can these cards be used for? I'm thinking of acquiring a used FX1400.
Can they be used for gaming I wonder? Drafting? I dunno... never owned one of these before. Suggestions?

CAN they be used for gaming? yes.
are they SUPPOSED or DESIGNED to be used for gaming? No.

The quadros are graphic design cards, not gaming cards. for gaming, get a GeForce 7800GT or the like. for graphic design, get a quadro.

EDIT: Here is an example, take two cards, both cost excactly the same amount, one is a quadro, the other is a geforce. The geforce version will suck at 3d rendering but rock at gaming, while the quadro will suck at gaming but rock at 3d rendering, even though both cost excactly the same amount.

You can? Wondering if 128MB of memory is enough though.

Comparison of Quadro and GeForce

The Quadros are actually excellent performers in gaming as well as pro 3D. In some instances they are faster then their GeForce counterparts depending on the particular model. This doesn't mean that every Quadro will be running with contemporary G70 based parts, but for those of this generation they are excellent all around cards.

That said, if you should pick it up should depend on the price you are going to get it for.

yup. a quadro is much faster at renderinbg while retaining most(as in 90%) of it's gaming performance.

Interesting... here's my situation... I'm looking to trade someone my AGP video card for their PCIe card because of a mobo/processor upgrade on my part.

How MIGHT a Quadro FX 1400 compare to a Radeon x800xt for gaming?

x800xt would throttle it ruthlessly. The FX 1400 is based on the GeForce FX line of GPUs, the gen that was bested by the R9700Pro. The x800xt is a different generation and significantly faster.

BenSkywalker, i am sorry but you are wrong.

The Quadro FX1400 more or less a 6800LE or 6800NU. All quadros still have the "FX" in their name.

so find some benchmarks of the 6800LE or 6800NU vs your current card and you will find your answer for gameing.

Now CAD/DCC the quadroFX will be up to 400% faster in certain applications.
