The NSA is working on an encryption-breaking quantum computer

To be fair, you may want to change the title to reflect that they're working on a quantum computer to do so, but haven't built one yet. Your title leads one to believe that it's been built already.

This is good news. It means not all encryption schemes have been bribed or undermined by the NSA if they still need to break some

This story smells of something like "Hey world, say hi to the possibility of quantum computers... some day... maybe...". I am not impressed.

This is good news, I hope they succeed.

Relying on technology not advancing in order to limit the abilities of the NSA is a fool's errand.

As much as I hate to admit it, so much technology has advanced by the defense/spy departments. It makes me wonder what's out there that we don't know about.

I'm surprised (and not convinced) that it's not been done already.

Don't turn around, oh oh oh, der comisar is in town.

They already have such a super computer. It's called Bitcoin. What did you think you were "mining" all this time? The process of mining Bitcoins is brute force encryption cracking.

I am going to dominate the B mining market with my quantum super computer. Muhahahahah.

If history is any guide, after the NSA gets their cracker working, the EFF, among others, will also get their cracker working. Board from EFF DES cracker shown above.

What is significant about a quantum computer is that, in theory, it should be very, very good at factoring the product of two large prime numbers.

If so, RSA would no longer be secure.

Cool stuff. I hope they succeed and put it to good use spying on dangerous countries and not US citizens.

The universe is a computer and we are a simulation. If you are very still and concentrate hard, you can feel yourself wink in and out of existence as each time quantum refreshes.

Someone will come up with an encryption algorithm that is quantum computer resistant.
But we will be left with more advanced quantum computers that could be used for other things. So could be a good thing in the long run.
