in HS my first class was at 7:35 in the morning. i had to be up well before dawn in the winter in order to get to school on time. it was horrific. why can't high school start after elem school, say, 9 am?

Quoted to show even lifers make linking mistakes. :Q

Yeah, I've followed research in this area for years now; this really f*cked me over in HS. Kids need a lot of sleep, as much as 10+ hours a night, because they're still growing (actually many bodybuilders are this way as well - growth seems to be the determining factor, not age). Current HSs are all wrong in that they start earlier just when kids who need the same amount of sleep start going to sleep later - due to hormones, not lack of discipline. A select few high schools are starting later, but despite research showing the benefits most are still archaic in this regard.

It's a shame, isn't it?

I had a zero period at 6am and liked it. Some people in HS actually have jobs and it's nice to be able to start earlier so you don't have to work all night. Samething with sports and after school activities.

too bad school is about learning not working or playing sports.
Starting early hurts academics.

schools need to go from like 9 until 4. That way I can actually get some sleep. I shouldn't complain, I went to an alt-ed school that started at 8:30.

They also need to serve better foods at High Schools. Kids slept the most 1) In the morning, 2) after lunch. If you serve them loads of simple carbs for lunch, odds are they will fall asleep right afterwards.

i forgot when my hs started (8?) but I usually went to bed past 2am, set my alarm for 3-3:30am (I liked the feeling of falling asleep), and then woke up at 6:30

even now, I usually go to bed around 4am and set my alarm for 6:15am for work at 8am

True, my high school started at 7:55am.

I didn't go to my district high school, I went to high school in other district which was about 12 miles away from my home before I moved to a new house. I had several serious classes such as Physics and tech classes which took most of my time. I went to bed at midnight and woke up at 6:30am. Got out of house at 7am because of rush hour and got to school at 7:30am. School started at 7:55am and finished at 2:36pm. Quickly changed my clothes into basketball practice jersey and shorts for basketball practice at 2:45pm and finished at 5pm. Went home after that, showered and did my homeworks. Same old sh!t.

While school is a place of learning it is also a place to get the "social skills". These really come out in sports when you have to interact with a group of people in a Team environment. Also if someone is actually exercising regularly they will tend to get better sleep because they actually do physical things and not just staying up all night playing video games.

As far as academics go, well it's not like it gets any easier when you get out of school. (me @ work at 7:00am)

My HS started at 7:20. It never bothered me, although I probably bitched at that time. I also worked at a dog kennel and had to stop and feed the dogs in the morning before school.

pft. starting point really does not matter.

The thing that got me was the homework. I understand we need it. But some teachers would pile it on! i had one teacher who would give 2-3 hours of homework a NIGHT. i also have 6-8 other subjects i had to do homework for.

They should cut some of the BS classes. I think kids today are getting a little overwhelmed with school, homework and work.

9 until 4 covers the exact same amount of time as 8 till 3, so I fail to see where the magical "extra time for sleep" comes into play.

I would guess they mean that he would be able to get more sleep in the night, by not having to get up so early in the morning. I would have been OK with this also, although I'm sure there are those who would oppose it saying it went too late into the afternoon.

Since a typical work day is 9-5 or 8-5, why do high schools find the need to be in classes at 745 and out at 245, I just dont see the point.

I lived 5 minutes away from my HS. Not having to take the bus means being able to wake up 25 minutes before your first class and still make it on time.

Yup. It isn't start time its homework time. The teachers that believe their homework should always take at least 2 hours are real problems. They should be teaching this stuff IN CLASS not expecting you to just learn it on your own. If the class is 45 minutes and the resulting homework (homework is supposed to be a summary of what you've learned) is 2 hours, then there is a huge problem. And when all your teachers are like this, cheating commences.

For hormonal reasons, HS-aged kids don't get tired till about 11 pm or later. Having to wake up at 6-7 for the typical high school limits them to 7-8 hours of sleep max when they need more like 9-11.

I know I (and most of my friends) spent a fair bit of high school in a sleep deprivation-induced daze, so it's not like this study is amazing news to me or anything like that. I still have a hard time falling asleep before 1 AM.
