Two years, hehe, giggle, snort.

Advisor: "GWestphal, I know you've been working 16hr days on this project for eighteen months straight but I've reconsidered and I don't think this topic really interests me anymore. I'd like you drop that and develop a grant proposal for this instead. Sorry, I'd like to stay to listen to you cry but I've got to get to that professional meeting in Sydney. Try to have it done when I get back. See'ya."

Scene - Thesis Defense:

Committee Lead: GWestphal, Your project is very exciting and your contribution to the field of cancer diagnosis via advanced optics has been immense. Can you just describe to us the theory of fluorescence, how does it work??

GWestphal: uhhh...

True story or so I hear for some unfortunate student.

OP - I feel you but look at the big picture and enjoy grad life while you can! What dept if you don't mind me asking? Seems like a pretty quick PhD, was the masters 2 years?

I think if you're going straight for your masters, it's a 2 year affair because you take more classes than a PhD student. I think the PhD is generally 3 years for masters plus 2 for the actual PhD. Of course, it can be much more than 2 years :p

The life of a grad student is difficult I think. I just made a spreadsheet of my projected income/expenses for the next year. In one year if I live very, very frugally and if nothing bad happens, I might be able to save $2300. Man, getting paid $20k a year is shitty. Just got my masters and will have my PhD in 2 years. When I'm making $80k in 2 years I'll feel filthy rich.

I think I just peed myself laughing at that. Welcome to my world.

I better call sons70, I hear being a gay escort is lucrative.

I got interviewed for that. They told me I'd be packaging candy, or something along those lines. Can't figure out what that has to do with being an escort. :hmm:

You can eat for far less than $7/day, but it will take some work. Lots of pasta and leftovers. No cereal, that will probably put you over the top. Eggs, cheap sandwiches, and pasta.

You spend too much on food to be considered frugal where I come from. $100 for every 2 weeks = double what you should spend. Also, $25 a week for Misc.?

Methinks our definitions of "very, very frugally" are different.
