Of course I'm going to compare it to games that are already released. What else should I compare it to? Do you think when it comes out two years from now that competing graphics will have gotten worse by then? 😕

I see the potential and I'm not impressed with it. Sure it looks nice and all, but hey so does Farcry. If I'm not impressed with it today, I'm especially not impressed with it if it's two years out.

I also don't think there is a very good sampling of "everyone else" here. I seem to be in a thread full of unreal fanboys.

I think it looks great, don't get me wrong. It simply appears to be an incremental increase in current technology much like Duke 3d was over Doom 1&2. It's not a generational leap like quake was over Doom 1&2, or like Doom 3 is over current rendering technologies.

Like I stated before, Unreal needs to step up and start rendering realtime lighting. That's what state-of-the-art is.

I love 2k4 as it is, & i cannot wait till the next one comes out, especially after seeing theses screenies!

I trust that they will do a good job, since they have with all the previous IMO.

They will have a lot of angry players if they remove assault mode though. Fortunately, i don't play AS, so i don't care, but i know it does have a loyal following.

The only thing that slightly worries me is how they mentioned making it easier for everyone to do well.
I should be happy to hear that, since i've been playing since 2k4 came out, & i still get owned regularly, but i really hope that for DM, that doesn't mean any stupid weapons with auto-lock on that will allow n00bs to run around with an AVRIL-style weapons killing when they never would have been able to before.

Even though it's frustrating as heck playing the extremely skilled players, having to work so hard to get better is part of the reason i love the game 🙂

Regardless, it looks like they are going to do an awesome job with the next one!

The unreal engine is going to be an efficiency monster, SMP aware and dedicated physics processor ready. It should perform great compared to the games of today.
 
Smilin where did you get the idea that UE3 doesn't do realtime shadowing?

Watch the tech demos for god's sakes. They have realtime fuzzy shadows and per-pixel lighting all over the place.

Ok, I got the GF6 Launch video. Now that impressed me 10x more than any screenshot I've seen to date. I had actually read that 1up article a while ago (it's a CGW reprint) and was not in the slightest bit impressed.

The video impresses me a great deal (I hope that makes everyone happy?) and yes, it should look much better than Doom 3 when it's released in a few years.

I didn't dodge it, I even mentioned before half-seriously that even Forza has better shadows that Doom 3. Soldier of Fortune 2 has better shadows and it came out in 2002? I was disgusted by the shadows in Doom 3.

You were playing at high quality right?

The shadows and lighting in doom 3 rival the best in the industry.
 
Even though many games are CPU limited now, it will be very interesting to see how much the PPU can offload the CPU.

It would be really nice to know if it would benefit from a dual-core setup.

From what I understand it'll help with ragdoll and other physics, number of NPCs and PC's on the screen, and how complex the body is on each individual. I think it'll be interesting to see an RTS take advantage of this.

The UE3 engine is supposed to be a 4 threaded app that runs at a constant 200fps in the backround for calculating super-accurate physics.

I would be almost certain it will, especially with bots.
If they are planning to use voice commands, they will need CPU power to work with the speech input, and they will also need physics/gameplay/AI calculations going on, so I would say it would be almost impossible NOT to use dual core for decent performance in some areas.
