Since the cable company refuses to service my subdivision, I'm stuck with either dial-up, satellite, or DSL. I chose DSL. So far (nearly 18 months) it's been rock solid. When I had a cable modem (before buying a house) my cable service would cut out like once a week.

I personally think it has more to do with quality of service than anything else. I do know BellSouth and DirecTV have treated me better than any cable company ever has!

Cable: call cable company, get cable modem, spend 5 minutes configuring...

DSL: call phone company, call again, call back after getting hung up on. Make appointment. Get install done. Spen 1 hour in futile attempt to configure. Call tech support to get it working. Demand to speak with supervisor. Get hung up on. Call Back. Get appointment for tech to fix it. Call phone company when tech doesn't show. Call Cable comapny.

take your pick...

I  my comcast. They guarentee me 6/768K, I've gotten like 18/1 before late at night.

It is expensive though, my dad pays about half for his 1.5/384 DSL...

Here Cable > DSL anyday.
DSL was super slow(compariatively) and disconnected alot.
Cable disconnects but not quite as often...

In other new smy IP changed for the first time in 2 years that was weird.

DSL sucks.

why?

Because I have been on the phone with India the last week trying to troubleshoot why my DSL keeps losing sync. The line tests okay, got a new modem, I have run a dedicated DSL line from the NID to the modem, and the DSL signal will still crap out. There is some kind of signal coming from outer space causing interference. That is why DSL sucks. It is very susceptible to sun spots.

Blame you particular BellSouth DSL Connection, not DSL itself.

DSL is normally rock solid. Yes, there can be a bad pair of wires which sounds like in your case but it is a local issue with you and BellSouth India.

By the way BellSouth has no Tech support in the U.S., they shipped all the jobs to India so the name should be Officially changed to BellIndia.

If you switch 'cable' with 'dsl/phone' you have described my situation to a T with RoadRunner vs. BellSouth.

I think it can be summed up that both cable and dsl can and will suck, however; it depends on your area and the companies that provide service there. For me personally, it'll be nice if I ever live in a place I can get Qwest DSL again, because it has been the best for me.

I used to use DSL because it was cheaper, but I'm so far from the nearest office I'd only get 768 kilobit down and the 128 kilobit up and towards the end it started dropping out on me which Verizon tried to blame on a bad modem. Switched to Optimum over cable and I get 6megabit down and 768kilobit up! I'm never going back. My buddy is a little closer to the cable office, and even though that's not supposed to matter, he gets like 8megabit down<Napolean> Lucky!</Napolean>.

So until Verizon gets their FIOS stuff running up here, they won't be gettin' any of my money. Any of you guys using broadband over power line? I'd be interested to hear how that works.

There are some cases where DSL is better then cable.
There are some cases where Cable is better then DSL.

They both have their ups and downs as far as both the technology goes, and the providers.

comparing one crappy DSL provider with a good Cable provider will result in better cable.

Quick question:

What kind of cable do you have running from the NID to the modem?

Guess that's because you're paying for the crappy residential plan. When I call Verizon, I talk to a helpful American.
