The Next Evolution in science and agriculture: The Development of Synthetic meat

I was having a lunch chat with a few profs from psychology, economics and biology at my local university. I came up with the topic of one day scientist making sythetic meat or DNA Cultured meat that has the same taste and nutritional value of meat obtained from real animals.

Animal-rights activist has long campaigned about the brutal conditions the animals face. I watched some videos of it when a group came to my school and it is simply stomach sickening to see how they are treated and slaughtered.

IF synthetic meat becomes a reality, it will be a big relief for the environment, less chances of diseases, organic pollutants released and other economic variables (lower prices maybe).

so what is your take on this?

Nope. Wouldn't eat it unless I was on a starship cruising throughout space, boldly going where no man has gone before.

Naw, i don't think so... it might in the future, but it won't be the next evolution. Even if they discover a way in 20 years, most people will be too reluctant to eat it. Only when we're in a desperate situation will it be popular.

I think the next thing is nootropics... smart drugs and life-extension drugs. It's already gaining huge momentum, and this could be huge in 5-10 years.

It would put a lot of people out of business though.

Automobiles put a lot of people out of business too. So does every major discovery.

'cept it's not natural.

Neither is the meat you eat now... much less half the other food you eat. Pumped full of more steroids and hormones than you can name.

That's why I shop @ Wild Oats. All natural food. It's amazing the taste difference and quality of foods you get there.

It's thinking like that, that keeps the cures for AIDS, cancer and other breakthroughs from occuring. Or inventions like a cheaper more efficient fuel source, or how to get man to mars and back.

You are wise to see that it will put a lot of people out of buisness.
Why can't you see that it will also employ many people?

the animal in those farms eat crap (feces, other dead animals) to mature in addition with steroids and growth hormones.

some of my profs and friends theorized why there are people who has extreme obesity disease are a result of the growth hormones messing up the natural functions of the body, thus causing the same effect as intended for the animals

yep, it will create allot of jobs in R&D and people that produce the synthetic meat. i would give up real meat in a heart beat if a more healthier alternative came along that tasted the same and did not cost a lot. I do my best to block the idea that im eating something that a few weeks ago was living and breathing and feeling pain.

What people were put out of business because of the automobile? (I'm asking a serious question)

Well, I didn't say that I had a problem with it. I think if something can be done to help the current livestock situation than it is a good thing.

I would tend to think that more farmers would go out of business than there would be people working in the places where the new meat is being created (that's just an assumption though).

carrage drivers, the rail road industry got hit bad later on, people who provided services to horses, but it also CREATED jobs

off the top of my head i could imagine the hourse and buggie people and railroad workers taking a huge decline because of the car industry.

i already thought of this along time ago, just imagining a huge tank prime rib growing on its own only needing certain things to have a full size side of beef in half the time. id try it, if it was good id stick with it, there would need to be HUGE regulation about what goes on when making it, otherwise it could get out of hand quick(addictive additives anyone?)

Sure if the animals are imported. That type of activity is heavily monitored in the US by the USDA and the FDA where necessary.

I used to shop there.

The problem is that it's exponentially more expensive than other stores.
