I always thought it would be neat to have in the EXIF a place where it would say the image was shot, IMO this would be the next best feature for a camera

I did remember reading reading some guy who made one for his nikon but it would be nice to see this grow so all cameras have it that way when you go into Aperture or lightroom you can see a map and click on a location and see pictures from that place

Hmmmm... I thought that this has been a feature on high end professional cameras for some time now, albeit you need an external GPS unit because no cameras have built-in GPS receivers.

Fuzzy makes a very good point. The fundamental question is, how does the camera know where it is?

Maybe a link to a cellphone?

Anyway, until that technology comes along, my solution is to create folders that show date and location, and then store the files accordingly.

i'd love this also. one of my favorite time wasters is surfing thru google earth and checking out pictures of places Ive never been to via its gallery layer. Its so cool to see a satellite view of a place and be able to see an actual shot from ground level. Almost takes you there. It is, IMO, the best feature of google earth. I'd love to put up some of my pics there and share it with the world, but I'd have to guestimate where the pic was taken.

and I just started cracking up at your sig, alfa. way to take things out of context there, huh? :p
I was talking about the car, but you know that already.

That feature has been around though it hasn't been built into the camera as far as I know. The way it works is that you carry a GPS device while shooting. Upon retriving images, the GPS data will be 'mapped' based on the time.
I know Sony makes one and it's around $50.

My new nokia n82 has that feature. Its called geotagging. I can add my location co-ordinates to my image :)

I'd rather not pay extra for this. I do have a Bluetooth GPS unit so at most I'd want my camera to have a BT interface.

I posted this thread over in Gadgets, Gear and Phones a while back. The Trips and Pics seems to work well in theory, but I haven't been able to find any real reaviews. It seems to be the GPS received in MSFT's Streets and Trips, attached to a battery pack.

I have a personal database to keep track of that stuff. I have an administration panel on my image gallery application where I type the address of the image location when I insert it into the database. I use Google Maps API to geocode the address and insert the coordinates into the database.

Maybe one day when I have more time I will make the software "production-ready" so others can use it.
