I'd consider one if it was offered here and there wasn't a coupe version of the Commodore. It wouldn't sell well in the US since it lacks conformity. Americans thrive on boring sameness.

Everyone says they want something unique, when what they want is the exact same thing as everyone else, just better. 🙂

At least it's better than it was 10 years ago, when C&D did a comparison test with five or six different midsized sedans. Parked them in front of a store for a photo, and someone came out and commented thinking they were a fleet of all the same car.

It's pretty clear that it happens on these forums too. Almost every thread where someone is asking for advice of what car to buy, the same cars come up repeatedly.

I do it too, I'm not claiming innocence here.

Some of it is that there are only a limited number of cars in existence. And some of it is that we're all relatively similar people. I mean there has to be some similarity between us if we hang out on a geek web site all day talking about cars. But there are cars that rarely come up in our conversations.

Maybe we should run a poll. El Caminos: awesome or ugly?

I'm voting awesome. They really are as much truck as I need and as much muscle car as I want (for now, give me a few months to drive it around). They don't pretend to be full size trucks, but can do light duty hauling stuff and heavy duty hauling ass.
 
All GM would have to do is convert it to LHD and smack a Chevy badge on it. Ta-da! Instant new El Camino.

Sadly no one there has enough brains (or balls) to do it. 🙁
 
There's the issue of safety and emission standards as well. That's why GM couldn't just keep doing the GTO even if they were selling. The GTO didn't meet 2007 standards.
 
When I went to Australia a couple summers ago, I remember seeing the ute's everywhere. I think they're really fantastic looking. Ford makes a variation too, but I like the Holden better.

The Pontiac G8s had to have the fuel tank relocated to be in front of the rear axle to meet U.S. safety regulations. Apparently it wasn't a major problem since the trunk is so huge to start with. I'm not sure if the Monaro would have the same issue.

It did. My cousin's GTO has the gas tank right behind the rear seat, you can tell it eats up a rather sizable chunk of the trunk space that would otherwise be there.

I'd be interested to see if that makes any real difference in crashes. I've never seen a car burnt as a result of a crash in my admittedly short lifespan...
