I'm woefully uninformed regarding current events. "The New Republic" was reccomended to me, but I won't be by a bookstore for a while and wondered whether or not I should just subscribe. I'm currently checking out the online version but thought I'd ask to see if any of you had read it and if you have a strong opinion about it. I'm aslo considering a subscription to the New York times but it's damn expensive since I live in Chicago.

Thoughts? Other reccomendations?

I know some of you ardently partisan people have an opinion one way or the other, now express it.

The New Republic is considered "left leaning" if that is what you're asking. Martin Perez and Al Gore are bosom buddies.

heh, I thought this was another Star Wars thread. I though it was an argument to see if The New Republic was better/worse than the Empire? heh, guess I am in geek phase atm.

If you don't want to spend money on a subscription you could go to your local library and read them there. Hmmm, that does take quite a more considerable amount of time but...that is why I guess they created an online version with pretty print capabilities if you wanted to save the text.

That is sort of what I'm looking for, what is most preferable would be if it wre either left or right and read by both sides...

I guess I'm more interested in the quality of writing than I am the politics. I'll read anything if it's well written.

My dad has had a subscription for years...
It's reasonably well written, definately a "leftist" magazine. (not just leaning!)

caveat: I've never read it much.

I'd visit a library, take a few suggestions and compare them there, and then subscribe to whichever one you like best.

salon.com has varying opinions from the right and the left, its also updated twice a day, nice book/movie reviews and other cool stuff. it cannot be found at the library.
